Sunday Post 48 | Boy, What a Week

My week started with six loads of laundry waiting to be washed, and while the first load was getting done, the washing machine died. Dead. No more washing. Ever.

I don’t know if anyone else has had the pleasure of needing a new big appliance since Covid began (at least in the US), but getting them is quite a challenge, and it’s gotten worse. Last summer, we had to get a new refrigerator, and even though we chose one in stock, it took about a week or so for delivery. At the time, that seemed like a bit of a wait.

The washing machine, which again we chose one in stock, will not be delivered until the end of the month. Some appliances would be inconvenient but not a big problem if we had to replace them, like the dishwasher or even the dryer. But the washer is something that you really can’t work around, short of buying a washboard and a big metal bucket thing. Do they even sell those things anymore?

I did find out that a dry cleaner I’ve used in the past also does wash and fold so that works as a temporary fix to be used sparingly. I was a little disappointed that they washed and folded my husband’s dress shirts without pressing and hanging, though. It felt like a weird thing for a place that does wash/fold and dry cleaning. I’m anxiously awaiting my new washer and hoping that the delivery isn’t delayed 🤞

As soon as I received the ARC, In Every Generation, I just had to binge-watch season 1 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And, after I finished the book and made the mistake of reading some critical reviews that I disagreed with, I had to go back and watch some pivotal episodes from other seasons (so I could, of course, feel shamelessly vindicated that I – and the author/editors – was/were right and the critical reviews were wrong – lol).

    The nice part of renting right now is someone else has to deal with fixing and replacing the appliances. But we did spend about 6 months just trying to get an intact bed for our daughter, an order we ended up needing to cancel because, no matter how much it said it was in stock and how many times we were promised none of the pieces would be missing pieces, we realized it wasn’t going to happen. Good thing we have a trundle frame and she’s really short so the low height is perfect for her. I hope you get your washing machine soon! What a terrible thing to have die.

      That’s so frustrating about the bed! But I’m glad you had something else that you could make work for the time being. Washing Machines are definitely something that is a problem if it dies. It’s one of the few things that is difficult to find an alternative for.

    I’m sorry to say but that’s some horrible luck, my friend. There really is no way to make that situation Less inconvenient. Hopefully the time will pass quickly!
    And thank you for sharing this post! I probably would’ve never found out about ‘In Every Generation’ otherwise and that should be interesting..

      In Every Generation is awesome. The writer stayed so true to the show that it was fabulous to revisit some beloved characters and to see the beginnings of the next generation of slayers and side kicks ❤️

    Sorry about your washing machine. My dryer has been broken for months. Nobody can figure out what’s wrong with it, and new ones are expensive and hard to get. At least I can just hang clothes up and let them air dry. I have a toddler, so we couldn’t survive without a washing machine.

      Dryers and Dishwashers have easy work-arounds if they break but washers are a necessity, especially when you have small children or even pets (like mine, anyway, who like to throw up on things you can only clean well by washing 😨)

    White goods are really difficult to source in the UK too. It’s not helped by having left the EU, where most of them came from. We recently bought a freezer which promptly died on us and they couldn’t replace it because of having no stock. Thankfully the old freezer was still working (just with broken drawer handles and not quite big enough for our needs) so we are still using that one!

    It is so utterly weird to not be able to get an appliance delivered the next day. I’ve heard about the delays but it’s still hard to grasp. We have service agreements for all of our stuff, which I’ve questioned, but now I’m thinking it was a wise choice. The last time when our washer died, we had to use a laundromat to dry the blankets that were in the washer. Not fun. Good luck!

    Wow, I never thought that appliances would so difficult to get during COVID. At least you found a workaround for a bit, but I feel your pain. I guess I would end up going to a laundromat, and that is always terrible. I have requested The Cranberry Inn, I hope I get it as I enjoyed her previous book quite a bit.

      My husband suggested the laundromat and I told him to go for it and that I looked forward to his stories when he got back home. 😂.

    Wha ha ha! A washing board and a bucket!! Please do take some photos of desperation kicks in. You can get through a whole lot of audiobooks doing that though…

    Oh no, it is always a nightmare when of the big household appliances goes, but the washer is probably the worst! I remember taking bags round to my grandfather’s this last time ours went. I hope you’ll be able to manage until your new one arrives at the end of the month, that is a crazy amount of time to wait! At least you had Buffy to escape into! 🧛‍♂️

    As for my week, it whizzed by in a blur! Great news though… I finally finished reading The Count of Monte Cristo! 😅 Take care and happy reading. 🙂

      I was thinking it would be so much easier if we had family nearby that we could lug our laundry to, but we don’t so laundry service it is. And, yes, Buffy is a great escape. ❤️

    Wake up the Bones now that sounds intriguing. So sorry about your washing machine. It is the one item in my kitchen that I would cry if it went wrong. It got me to thinking, my mum had a twin tub. It took hours just to wash and dry anything. Now all we have to do is put it in the machine and press go. I’m binge watching the last series of Grim. I’m heavily into my detective programmes, and this one you have to watch from the beginning or you will be thinking, what is going on? It is about a detective, who is also a Grim. There are humans, who are animals, and he investigates murders in their community. As I say, you’ve got to watch the first series to understand any of the plot, but I recently found it on Sky, and hadn’t watched the last series to see how it ended.

    I was afraid our washer was dying a slow death, but it just needed some new parts. Even with that, it took over two weeks for them to come in. I’ve heard horror stories about the wait time for new appliances, so I hope yours is shorter. I also got a widget for Wake the Bones – looks like a good one!
