Sunday Post 76 | Happy May Day

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted here @ Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog and showcase books and things we have received. Share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead. See rules here: Sunday Post Meme

When Monday starts with it taking 20 minutes to make it the less than a mile to work, you know it’s going to be one of those weeks and it was.

One of the first things I needed to do to get ready for my big May (daughter’s graduation and beach vacation for those who don’t already know) was to get my little feetsies sandal-ready. My mom is one who never even thinks about what her feet look like in the sandals she ALWAYS wears, but I’m not that carefree. A pedicure and painted nails are a must for me.

I discovered last year that I could do a home pedicure that came out even better and with less risk (some of those people who do manicures and pedicures don’t seem to be aware that there is a human attached to those appendages). They have these wonderful little pedicure booties that are filled with stuff to make your feet soft and pretty.

So, I can now check that off of my list. My nails are now pretty and ready to be seen 😍

How was your week?

I didn’t expect to have any books to put here this week, but I do have some. I am particularly excited about Daisy Darker since Alice Feeney quickly rose to an auto buy author for me. I also received a physical ARC copy of Cold Cold Bones by Kathy Reichs this week but I received the digital version last week, so I didn’t see any need in listing it twice.

Two warriors shepherd an ancient god across a broken land to end the tyrannical reign of a royal family in this new epic fantasy from the author of The Vanished Birds. ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF 2022—Tordotcom, BookPage, LitHub. The people suffer under the centuries-long rule of the Moon Throne. The royal family—the despotic emperor and his monstrous sons, the Three Terrors—hold the countryside in their choking grip. They bleed the land and oppress the citizens with the frightful powers they inherited from the god locked under their palace. But that god cannot be contained forever. With the aid of Jun, a guard broken by his guilt-stricken past, and Keema, an outcast fighting for his future, the god escapes from her royal captivity and flees from her own children, the triplet Terrors who would drag her back to her unholy prison. And so it is that she embarks with her young companions on a five-day pilgrimage in search of freedom—and a way to end the Moon Throne forever. The journey ahead will be more dangerous than any of them could have imagined. Both a sweeping adventure story and an intimate exploration of identity, legacy, and belonging, The Spear Cuts Through Water is an ambitious and profound saga that will transport and transform you—and is like nothing you’ve ever read before.

The New York Times bestselling Queen of Twists returns…with a family reunion that leads to murder. After years of avoiding each other, Daisy Darker’s entire family is assembling for Nana’s 80th birthday party in Nana’s crumbling gothic house on a tiny tidal island. Finally back together one last time, when the tide comes in, they will be cut off from the rest of the world for eight hours. The family arrives, each of them harboring secrets. Then at the stroke of midnight, as a storm rages, Nana is found dead. And an hour later, the next family member follows… Trapped on an island where someone is killing them one by one, the Darkers must reckon with their present mystery as well as their past secrets, before the tide comes in and all is revealed. With a wicked wink to Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, Daisy Darker’s unforgettable twists will leave readers reeling. “Wow! Echoes of Christie’s And Then There Were None but turned into something wonderfully original and wrapped in a genuinely creepy dysfunctional family fairy-tale of a novel, this takes Feeney to the next level. I LOVED IT!” —Sarah Pinborough, bestselling author of Behind Her Eyes and Insomnia

In Rati Mehrotra’s Night of the Raven, Dawn of the Dove, a young guardswoman struggles with her unwitting role as a major pawn in the deadly games between two kingdoms in a monster-infested alternate medieval India. Bound to the queen of Chandela by a forbidden soul bond that saved her when she was a child, Katyani has never fallen short of what’s expected of her—becoming the best guardswoman the Garuda has ever seen and an advisor to the crown prince when he ascends to the throne. But when the latest assassination attempt against the royals leaves them with a faceless body and no leads to the perpetrator, Katyani is unwillingly shipped off to guard the Chandela princes in Acharya Mahavir’s esteemed monastic school in Nandovana, a forest where monsters have roamed unchecked for generations. Katyani wants nothing more than to return to her duties, especially when the Acharya starts asking questions about her past. The only upside of her stay are her run-ins with Daksh, the Acharya’s son, who can’t stop going on about the rules and whose gaze makes her feel like he can see into her soul. But when Katyani and the princes are hurriedly summoned back to Chandela before their training is complete, tragedy strikes and Katyani is torn from the only life she has ever known. Alone and betrayed in a land infested by monsters, Katyani must find the answers to her past so she can save what she loves and forge her own destiny. Bonds can be broken, but debts must be repaid.

“When it comes to nerve-shredding, edge-of-your-seat suspense, Dodd consistently delivers the goods…Point Last Seen is a gobsmackingly great read.”—Booklist STARRED REVIEW. Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Karin Slaughter and Sandra Brown, New York Times bestselling author Christina Dodd’s all-new thriller, POINT LAST SEEN, will have readers keeping the lights on all night. LIFE LAST SEEN. When you’ve already died, there should be nothing left to fear… When Adam Ramsdell pulls Elle’s half-frozen body from the surf on a lonely California beach, she has no memory of what her full name is and how she got those bruises ringing her throat. GIRL LAST SEEN. Elle finds refuge in Adam’s home on the edge of Gothic, a remote village located between the steep lonely mountains and the raging Pacific Ocean. As flashes of her memory return, Elle faces a terrible truth—buried in her mind lurks a secret so dark it could get her killed. POINT LAST SEEN. Everyone in Gothic seems to hide a dark past. Even Adam knows more than he will admit. Until Elle can unravel the truth, she doesn’t know who to trust, when to run and who else might be hurt when the killer who stalks her nightmares appears to finish what he started… “No one does high-stakes, high-voltage suspense quite like Dodd.” —Booklist (starred review)

Did you get any good books this week?

We decided to try Outer Range this week on Prime. It’s dark, gritty, and a lot of strange. I’m not sure what I think, yet.

  1. Maybe I need to try that home pedicure kit. I’ve got some very rough patches on my feet.

I know what you mean about taking 20 minutes to drive a mile. Sorry that set the tone for your week.

  2. Sorry to hear it was one of those weeks for you! I have had a super busy week at work and personally too. In the bit of free time I had at home, I read Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens, watched The Ted Bundy Tapes and also gave myself a pedicure! 😊 Take care and happy reading.

  3. My mum and I are the opposite of you and yours. She is always commenting on my unpainted nails when I wear sandals 😂. Hope this week is a better one for you.

  5. My daughter cannot wait until sandal season, and will wear flip-flops until the weather gets too cold for them. Even then it takes a while for her to change to boots.

    1. I have a collection of lovely flip flops, so I’m totally with your daughter ❤️. Have a great week!

    1. I read one other Christina Dodd book and absolutely loved it, so I am very excited about this one. And you must have a pedicure at least once, even if it’s just a home one. You’ll wonder why you never pampered yourself with one before. Have a great week!

  6. I had a nice peaceful week. We started watching Outer Range as well, and like you, we’re not sure what to make of it. I hope it doesn’t end up being really disappointing.

    1. I never used to until my sister brought these disposable pedicure booties with her for my birthday last year. They are so simple to use.

  7. Self-pedicures sound great, Tessa, all ready for the beach! Lots of fantasy on your list. I like that!
And I just finished Ozark (the last half of the last season). Very Soprano-like ending (I was unhappy but oh well). We’ll try Outer Range. Have a great time at your daughter’s graduation and enjoy the beach.

  8. A new Alice Feeney?? Ooooh yea!!!

I hear you on the mani’s and pedi’s. It’s a given for me. My nails are ALWAYS done. Toes only in the summery months. For now I just have a clear coat on them, but it’s too cold for sandals already.

You are going to have a wonderful May!!

Have a good week and happy reading!

    1. I’m looking forward to the new Alice Feeney book for sure! I usually have my toes painted, though with my hands it starts chipping after a day, so I gave up on that long ago. Have a great week!

  9. That’s nice that you can do a pedicure on yourself that’s just as good as a professional one. I can’t because I’m plus size and I have a hard time bending over. Fortunately, the place I go to is really great. The only time I have a hard time is when they scrub off the dead skin because my feet are very ticklish.

    1. That tickles me too. It’s good you found a wonderful mani pedi person. I’ve had a few over the years but it since I’ve been living where I am now.

  10. My daughter graduates at the end of May. I will need to make time to tco my toes as well. I’ve been hiding them since October ( I ran a marathon and lost 4 toe nails!)

    1. My daughter whose graduating is a dancer, and her toe nails are always in rough shape. She never even wears sandals anymore because of it. Hope you have a great week!

  11. Like your mom, I also don’t care how my feet looks like as I’m more shoes person. But even when I occasionally wear sandals I don’t care. I’m not paint nails person either. Maybe living in country where people don’t judge if you go out of house without makeup or in pyjamas helps.

  12. I’m loving the setting in Daisy Darker – but can’t believe Nana was the first victim! That’s one cold-blooded killer. Outer Range is also on my list. Dark, gritty, and strange usually work for me, but sometimes it can be too much.

    1. The rest of the week was just more of the same craziness but this week has started much quieter and normal. Pedicures are the best form of pampering ❤️

  14. I’m with you…no way I’m wearing sandals if my toes aren’t ready😏
