I have a lot of romcoms on my schedule, and I figured out it’s probably because February is such a big romcom reading month. I don’t mind, though. So far, they all have been very good. I’m just starting The Second You’re Single by Cara Tanamachi, so I’m not sure yet whether it will be very good too, but I am hopeful. It definitely sounds good.

Genre: RomCom

Pages: 285 pages

Freelance writer Sora Reid believes in inertia. She’s the odd one out in a close-knit family of go-getters, including her Japanese-American mom, who hints about her need to lose weight, and her soon-to-be married, overachieving younger sister, who needs her to have a date for the wedding, since a wedding party couples’ dance with their Scottish great uncle Bob simply won’t do. For Sora, minimal input, minimal expectations is the way to go. She’d rather stay at home with her insufferable neighbor and her adorable pitbull. The one thing that disrupts her inertia: an intense dislike for Valentine’s Day. What is it with the commercial love machine? Why do we pin our hopes on one romantic day, when staying home with a package of bacon and a bottle of tequila would be way better? Sora’s been betrayed and disappointed more than once and her heart is starting to feel like her Grandma Mitsuye’s antique Japanese ceramic bowl, with its many gold-filled cracks. When her pledge to stay single in February inspires readers to #gosolo, Sora has a responsibility to empower her readers. But relationships aren’t built to last, so it shouldn’t be that hard. Right? Enter Jack Mann. A muscle-bound baker who looks like he lifts logs on the weekends, Sora hasn’t thought of Jack since they were in elementary school together. When they see each other at the local grocery store and the attraction hits hard, Sora knows she has to shut it down, quick. She can’t #gosolo AND get the guy. She can’t let down her readers. And relationships always end, so why should Jack be any different–even though he’s confounding all her long-held expectations of love?

I have had Ninth House since it first came out back in 2019, so when the IG book club I’m in chose it for this month, I decided to read it very slowly (2 chapters per day), so I could fit it in with my full ARC schedule. It has such an incredibly complex mystery and plenty of thrills, so you can imagine I liked it a lot. It is a great mash-up of my two favorite genres – fantasy and thriller. Book 2 just came out, and I may do a slow read of it next month.

  • Genre: Fantasy (Dark Academia)
  • Pages: 476 pages

Galaxy “Alex” Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale’s freshman class. Raised in the Los Angeles hinterlands by a hippie mom, Alex dropped out of school early and into a world of shady drug-dealer boyfriends, dead-end jobs, and much, much worse. In fact, by age twenty, she is the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved multiple homicide. Some might say she’s thrown her life away. But at her hospital bed, Alex is offered a second chance: to attend one of the world’s most prestigious universities on a full ride. What’s the catch, and why her? Still searching for answers, Alex arrives in New Haven tasked by her mysterious benefactors with monitoring the activities of Yale’s secret societies. Their eight windowless “tombs” are the well-known haunts of the rich and powerful, from high-ranking politicos to Wall Street’s biggest players. But their occult activities are more sinister and more extraordinary than any paranoid imagination might conceive. They tamper with forbidden magic. They raise the dead. And, sometimes, they prey on the living.

Wildblood sounds very good. Dark Fantasy usually has a pretty big thriller plot, and that’s what I’m hoping with this one. I love the mashup of fantasy and thriller.

Eighteen-year-old Victoria is a Wildblood. Since she was kidnapped at the age of six and manipulated by the Exotic Lands Touring Company, she’s worked as a tour guide ever since with a team of fellow Wildbloods who take turns using their magic to protect travelers in a Jamaican jungle teeming with ghostly monsters. When the boss denies Victoria an earned promotion to team leader in favor of Dean, her backstabbing ex, she’s determined to prove herself. Her magic may be the most powerful on the team, but she’s not the image the boss wants to send their new client, Thorn, a renowned goldminer determined to reach an untouched gold supply deep in the jungle. Thorn is everything Victoria isn’t – confident, impossibly kind, and so handsome he leaves her speechless. And when he entrusts the mission to her, kindness turns to mutual respect, turns to affection, turns to love. But the jungle is treacherous, and between hypnotic river spirits, soul-devouring women that shed their skin like snakes, and her ex out for revenge, Victoria has to decide – is promotion at a corrupt company really what she wants? A fierce, lush fantasy by New York Times bestselling author Lauren Blackwood, Wildblood tells the story of a girl who must find the strength to defeat the demons of the jungle as well as her own to find where she truly belongs.

    1. It’s the perfect palette cleanser for the darkness of thrillers. I have more than usual right now but I have had a lot of thrillers on my plate the last few months, so I’m not complaining 😊

  3. I have a lot of romcoms to read too. I didn’t realize that February is such a big romcom month but it makes sense now due to valentines day.

    1. I saw a post that said something like “do you have your romcoms lined up for Feb yet?” And it was a total aha moment 😊

  4. I’m still reading ”It’s Her Fault”. The title matches what is inside, about blame, but mostly the mother. For either working, or having a nanny, or not having more children. I am almost half way through and can’t wait to the end to see who was responsible for the kidnapping.

    1. I hope the ending is as good as its been so far. It sounds like it has just that bit of relatability that really allows you to sink your teeth in it. I think all moms everywhere understand mom guilt.

  5. I got Ninth House a few months ago. Can’t wait to read it at some point! I’m currently reading The Lost Ticket by Freya Sampson. I have about 200 pages or so to go until I finish reading it, but really great book so far.
