Book Description

Slay meets Eliza and Her Monsters in Eric Smith’s Don’t Read the Comments, an #ownvoices story in which two teen gamers find their virtual worlds—and blossoming romance—invaded by the real-world issues of trolling and doxing in the gaming community.

Divya Sharma is a queen. Or she is when she’s playing Reclaim the Sun, the year’s hottest online game. Divya—better known as popular streaming gamer D1V—regularly leads her #AngstArmada on quests through the game’s vast and gorgeous virtual universe. But for Divya, this is more than just a game. Out in the real world, she’s trading her rising-star status for sponsorships to help her struggling single mom pay the rent.

Gaming is basically Aaron Jericho’s entire life. Much to his mother’s frustration, Aaron has zero interest in becoming a doctor like her, and spends his free time writing games for a local developer. At least he can escape into Reclaim the Sun—and with a trillion worlds to explore, disappearing should be easy. But to his surprise, he somehow ends up on the same remote planet as celebrity gamer D1V.

At home, Divya and Aaron grapple with their problems alone, but in the game, they have each other to face infinite new worlds…and the growing legion of trolls populating them. Soon the virtual harassment seeps into reality when a group called the Vox Populi begin launching real-world doxxing campaigns, threatening Aaron’s dreams and Divya’s actual life. The online trolls think they can drive her out of the game, but everything and everyone Divya cares about is on the line…

And she isn’t going down without a fight.

My Thoughts

I chose to read and review this book because of the gaming aspect and because Amazon ranks it in YA Science and Technology fiction. So, basically, it is loosely, pretty-close-to SFF – close enough for me, anyway ☺️. I’m just starting this today and I’m really looking forward to it. ❤️

Book Description

In the aftermath of the events in the High Halls, there are loose ends. One of those loose ends is the fieflord, Candallar. In an attempt to understand his involvement—with the Barrani, with the High Court, and with the much hated Arcanum—Kaylin has been sent to the fiefs.

She has mixed feelings about this. There’s nothing mixed about her feelings when she discovers a very unusual building in the border zone between two fiefs, and far more questions are raised than are answered. Her attempt to get answers leads her back to the Imperial Palace and its resident Dragon librarian, the Arkon.

Things that were lost in the dim past were not, perhaps, destroyed or obliterated—and what remains appears to be in the hands of a fieflord and his allies—allies who would like to destroy Kaylin’s friends, the Emperor, and possibly the Barrani High Court itself. This is bad.

What’s worse: The librarian who hates to leave his library has a very strong interest in the things that might, just might, have been preserved, and—he is leaving his library to do in person research, no matter what Kaylin, the Hawks, or the Emperor think.

He is not the only one. Other people are gathering in the border zone; people who believe knowledge is power. But power is also power, and it might be too late for the Empire’s most dedicated Historian—and Kaylin and her friends, who’ve been tasked with his safety.

My Thoughts

Whew! It was quite a read. Great world building that is complex and amazingly detailed. Characters that are fantastical but well-developed. It is number 15 in the series and I haven’t read 1-14 BUT it was pretty easy to get into, understand, and appreciate. The names were the hardest part, but if I’m being honest, they would have been regardless of whether or not I had read the other books in the series.

Book Description

An edgy female police detective…

An ambitious FBI special agent…

Together they are at the heart of the ticking-clock investigation for a psychopathic serial killer. The bond they forge in this crucible sets the stage for high-stakes suspense.

Detective Kara Quinn, on leave from the LAPD, is on an early morning jog in her hometown of Liberty Lake when she comes upon the body of a young nurse. The manner of death shows a pattern of highly controlled rage.

Meanwhile in DC, FBI special agent Mathias Costa is staffing his newly minted Mobile Response Team. Word reaches Matt that the Liberty Lake murder fits the profile of the compulsive Triple Killer. It will be the first case for the MRT. This time they have a chance to stop this zealous if elusive killer before he strikes again. But only if they can figure out who he is and where he is hiding before he disappears for another three years. The stakes are higher than ever before, because if they fail, one of their own will be next…

My Thoughts

Doesn’t it just sound like a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat? It’s a bit on the longer side, but it sounds like the pages will just turn fast and furious.

  2. I’ll be interested to see what you think of Don’t Read the Comments when you’re finished! I follow Eric Smith on Twitter and was excited to see him release a book, but I’m so torn, because what if I hate it? I can’t handle that pressure. xD

    1. The early reviews have been good so I am optimistic for sure. I was trying to focus on cleaning up/organizing my home office and I was like “I just want to start this book”. So, of course I saved the cleaning for later, made a cup of coffee, and am getting ready to enjoy the book ☺️

  3. I have a friend who was really into the Chronicles of Elantra for a while. She even gifted me the first three on Kindle, but I had sort of forgotten about them! oops. That’s interested that you were able to pick it up when there were so many books in the series prior to that one. Now I’m curious and want to go hunt out the three that I have and read them.
