What is your go-to website to check out book reviews? Plus, Weekly Updates #BookBloggerHop #bookish #discussionpost

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book-related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blogs.

What is your go-to website to check out book reviews?

Well, your sites, really – first and foremost. Every day I read the reviews that you all post, and I really do mark down books that interest me. Sometimes, I immediately purchase a book for that magical day in the future when I will have time to read a book I buy.

But if I’m looking for a particular book, one that I haven’t seen come across anyone’s feed, I still tend to go to Goodreads (even though I’ve been using Story Graph now more consistently than Goodreads for recording my own reads). Since they allow early reviews to be posted and you can go to all the reviews rated a certain way, it’s more convenient than anything else I know of.

My week has been very sneezy, goopy, and congested but also very sunny and warm with the perfect temps of high 60s to 70s (that’s low to mid-20s for my Celsius friends). Allergies can really make me tired too, or perhaps it’s the snoring that wakes me from someone else who is congested 🤫 But, it’s that time of year, and I have plenty of meds for that.

Easter was very nice. Both girls were home, and the oldest was in a much better emotional state than the last time she came home. She had a little hiccup with her CPA testing this past year and a half and has to start the 4 tests over. I love that she is thinking more proactively about it, which is what we were trying to get her to do. You know, if what you’ve been doing isn’t working, you need to try something different. You just don’t keep doing the same old thing and hope that it works this time.😇

I’ve ramped up my reading to a book per day, mostly to get caught up, but I’m going to try and keep that pace up a little longer to hopefully get further ahead. I prefer being a month ahead of the publication dates, but I allowed myself to lose that gap somewhere along the way.

  1. For me, it’s mainly Goodreads. I don’t like the Storygraph in terms of the community featuers on there. You can’t see people’s friends and therefore cannot easily build your own “network” there.

  2. I love reading reviews by bloggers and am constantly writing down names of books. I often go straight to the library website too and see if they have a certain book in stock. My TBR grows every week.

  3. Like you, I’m doing my blog hopping for reviews but still use Goodreads as my primary source to research a potential book to add to my shelf. I’ve amassed many trusted friends there over the years, as eclectic as my reading and they prove reliable time and again.

  4. I started Storygraph this year and it’s fallen by the wayside. And yeah, my TBR is out of control because of other bloggers so really it’s your fault, and not my own impulse control. 🤣

  5. I’ve gotten more than a few books after reading your reviews, Tessa. Other than other bloggers I trust, I use Goodreads – but skip over the troll reviews. Love the Friends post – I just saw that episode not too long ago, lol. I’ve been trying to ramp up my reading also. I really need to get caught up with my NG shelf. I hate posting a month or more after the release date.

  6. I also check out blogs for reviews as these are the people I know (sort of) and trust. I will read reviews on Goodreads and Amazon but if they are not someone I trust, I take them with a grain of salt. So sorry to hear you are all having issues with allergies, I am the same. We have been in the high 70s low 80s here in Southern Ontario, so I have been trimming bushes etc. which doesn’t help. Glad to hear you had a good Easter, Tessa. We did as well. Have a good week ahead and keep reading and reviewing those ARCs, you will get back on track.

  7. Wow, reading a book a day, I wish I could be that focussed. I don’t check for reviews before I buy a book, mostly because most of the books I have read are second hand. If the cover interests me, I will read it.

      1. If I am reading a book I like, it is easy to reading a book without realising. I can read fast, but I find if I am on my own, I can concentrate on what I am reading.

  8. I’ve collected a bunch of blogs that I like to visit for reviews (such as yours). I also read some of the reviews on Goodreads. Hope you feel better soon so you can enjoy the sunshine even more. Have a great weekend!

  9. I get lots of book ideas from your site, Tessa! You and Teri are my go-to book blogs for fantasy, and I’ve enjoyed your recommendations. I hope you start feeling a little better soon. We’re expecting spring sometime next week and I’m sure the pollen will start up right after that.

  10. I read blogs I follow but like you, if I want to check reviews on a particular book, I go to GoodReads. It helps having all of them in one place for a single book. I also got my old pace of reading two books a week and I hope to keep it now but that also means I’m spending less time on the blog and only catching up on posts 2-3 times a week.

    1. My degree is in English Lit and it’s definitely a college program that requires picking up some reading skills, especially for reading quickly but still thoroughly. Just had to dust those off. 😊
