I graduated to a small splint on Friday, and boy am I glad to be done with that boot. I’ve got to call Monday to start physical therapy, which will be painful, but I’ve had a god experience with it in the past. A little pain is worth a stronger ankle.

My birthday is Tuesday, so of course the festivities started this weekend. I’m so spoiled – my husband always stretches my birthday out over multiple days to a week. Usually, I’m made to sit back and relax -though this year, hurting my ankle saw to that over two weeks ago. And, he makes me all my favorite bad for me foods. Sometimes we go out to a movie or a show and dinner. We did a show last weekend (Riverdance) though I refused dinner out before the show because the thought of trying to get around to the restaurant and through the restaurant in that boot and crutches felt overwhelming to say the least.

So, that was my week – how was yours?

Edward Ashton’s Antimatter Blues is the thrilling follow up to Mickey7 in which an expendable heads out to explore new terrain for human habitation. Summer has come to Niflheim. The lichens are growing, the six-winged bat-things are chirping, and much to his own surprise, Mickey Barnes is still alive—that last part thanks almost entirely to the fact that Commander Marshall believes that the colony’s creeper neighbors are holding an antimatter bomb, and that Mickey is the only one who’s keeping them from using it. Mickey’s just another colonist now. Instead of cleaning out the reactor core, he spends his time these days cleaning out the rabbit hutches. It’s not a bad life. It’s not going to last. It may be sunny now, but winter is coming. The antimatter that fuels the colony is running low, and Marshall wants his bomb back. If Mickey agrees to retrieve it, he’ll be giving up the only thing that’s kept his head off of the chopping block. If he refuses, he might doom the entire colony. Meanwhile, the creepers have their own worries, and they’re not going to surrender the bomb without getting something in return. Once again, Mickey finds the fate of two species resting in his hands. If something goes wrong this time, though, he won’t be coming back.
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author known for her “superb pacing, twisted characters, and captivating prose” (BuzzFeed), Lisa Jewell returns with a scintillating new psychological thriller about a woman who finds herself the subject of her own popular true crime podcast. Celebrating her forty-fifth birthday at her local pub, popular podcaster Alix Summers crosses paths with an unassuming woman called Josie Fair. Josie, it turns out, is also celebrating her forty-fifth birthday. They are, in fact, birthday twins. A few days later, Alix and Josie bump into each other again, this time outside Alix’s children’s school. Josie has been listening to Alix’s podcasts and thinks she might be an interesting subject for her series. She is, she tells Alix, on the cusp of great changes in her life. Josie’s life appears to be strange and complicated, and although Alix finds her unsettling, she can’t quite resist the temptation to keep making the podcast. Slowly she starts to realize that Josie has been hiding some very dark secrets, and before she knows it, Josie has inveigled her way into Alix’s life—and into her home. But, as quickly as she arrived, Josie disappears. Only then does Alix discover that Josie has left a terrible and terrifying legacy in her wake, and that Alix has become the subject of her own true crime podcast, with her life and her family’s lives under mortal threat. Who is Josie Fair? And what has she done?
The thrilling follow-up to the Edgar Award–winning Bearskin, about two siblings on the verge of inheriting millions but who discover dark secrets in their family’s past. Siblings Bowman and Summer were raised by their father and two uncles on a remote Colorado ranch. They react differently to his radical teachings and the confusions of adolescence. As young adults, they become estranged but are brought back together in their thirties by the prospect of an illegal and potentially dangerous inheritance from their grandfather. They must ultimately reconcile with each other and their past in order to defeat ruthless criminal forces trying to extort the inheritance. Set in the rugged American West and populated by drug cartels, shadowy domestic terrorists, and nefarious business interests, Panther Gap shows James McLaughlin’s talents on full display: gorgeous environmental writing, a white-knuckle thriller plot, and characters dealing with legacy, identity, and their own place in the world.
From the New York Times-bestselling author of Lookaway, Lookaway, Wilton Barnhardt’s Western Alliances is a vivid portrait of a wealthy family set against the backdrop of the 2008 financial crisis. This laugh-out-loud, darkly funny novel follows the Costa family—whose members are every bit as richly absurd as the characters in HBO’s Succession. Salvador, the patriarch, runs one of Wall Street’s biggest banks the summer before everything collapses; Roberto and Rachel, his two children, have never worked a day in their lives; and Lena, his ex-wife, is a scheming hypochondriac. Part travelogue, part epic family drama, the novel follows Roberto and Rachel across Europe as the two dilettantes come to terms with their father’s choices and the repercussions of his actions. Oozing with his signature satire and biting wit, Barnhardt invites readers on a literary romp from an elegant Paris apartment to a hilariously-inept London hotel, ancient churches and crypts to gleaming Mediterranean coasts, hot dog stands in Providence, RI to the best places in Manhattan, and terrifying encounters in the Serbian countryside to dangerous liaisons in Moscow, as two grown-up rich kids are forced to come of age at last. Alice Sebold calls Barnhardt “an absolute ringmaster of fiction,” and in Western Alliances, he delivers yet again an un-put-down-able saga examining privilege, loyalty, ambition, and what family members owe to one another.
The #1 New York Times-bestselling author’s terrifying new thriller about one man’s ice-cold malice, and one woman’s fight to reclaim her life. Former Army brat Morgan Albright has finally planted roots in a friendly neighborhood near Baltimore. Her friend and roommate Nina helps her make the mortgage payments, as does Morgan’s job as a bartender. But after she and Nina host their first dinner party—attended by Luke, the flirtatious IT guy who’d been chatting her up at the bar—her carefully built world is shattered. The back door glass is broken, cash and jewelry are missing, her car is gone, and Nina lies dead on the floor. Soon, a horrific truth emerges: It was Morgan who let the monster in. “Luke” is actually a cold-hearted con artist named Gavin who targets a particular type of woman, steals her assets and identity, and then commits his ultimate goal: murder. What the FBI tells Morgan is beyond chilling. Nina wasn’t his type. Morgan is. Nina was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. And Morgan’s nightmare is just beginning. Soon she has no choice but to flee to her mother’s home in Vermont. While she struggles to build something new, she meets another man, Miles Jameson. He isn’t flashy or flirtatious, and his family business has deep roots in town. But Gavin is still out there hunting new victims, and he hasn’t forgotten the one who got away.

This appeared on my doorstep on Friday. A gift from Penguin/Random House and the author, Colleen Oakley. I love the personal note from Coleen maybe even more than the actual book. And, since I wanted to drop everything and start reading it – that is saying a lot. This book sounds so fun! I can’t wait to delve in ❤️

I saw that Black Panther 2 was out on Disney+ a few weeks ago, but trying to find time to watch a 3 hour movie is not an easy feat. We managed to watch it last night. It was very good – very poignant too. They did a very nice remembrance of Chadwick Boseman – the actor and his character.

    1. Me too! They put it as read now for a limited number of people, so I snagged it. Nora Roberts has been hit or miss for me lately but I’m always hopeful.

  3. I’m so glad that your ankle is healing well and hope that the Physio isn’t too painful. Your Net Galley books look brilliant but I’m not requesting any more until I’ve read some of the ones crowded onto my shelves.

    1. I’ve been that way with Nora Roberts lately – hit or miss. I’ve liked what I’ve read by Lisa Jewell though. I hope we both enjoy both books if you decide to give the Jewell book a read.

  5. Glad your ankle is doing better. Happy early Birthday too! So sweet that your husband makes it a multiple day affair! I used to ask for a week. haha! Now, my son’s birthday is 3 days before mine, so I’m all partied out after his party. Also, a week before is Mother’s Day. My poor husband has a lot to celebrate in May. haha! I hope you have a lovely week and enjoy being spoiled!

    1. That is tough timing. The birthday closest to mine is my youngest daughter and hers isn’t until March 30th, so I always waited til mine was over then started working on hers.

      1. Ahh, that’s a nice space. Luckily, he didn’t come on my birthday. I don’t know why everyone thought that would be so cool. I mean, it’s not that big of a deal but kind of weird. haha!

  6. Happy Birthday, Tessa! I’m glad you’re getting better and can move around better now. Nice haul! I was debating the Nora Roberts book, it was read now for me. But, I just have too many books so I decided against it.

  7. Happy Birthday, Tessa! Sounds like hubby gives you the royal treatment – nice. I also watched Wakanda last week. I thought the memorial to Boseman was done so well. And I adored the ending.

  9. Once again, I am reading this ten days late, so Happy Belated Birthday! I’m glad your ankle is healing well. I also have several of the books you added and hope we both enjoy them. I haven’t watched either of the Black Panther movies, but hope to before I head back home at the end of March.
