I’ve enjoyed other books by Kathryn Freeman in the same genre, so I’m hoping I like Nobody Puts RomComs in the Corner. I do love the Dirty Dancing reference in the title. I’ll be starting it today.

  • Genre: Rom Com
  • Pages: 384 pages
  • Publisher: One More Chapter

The perfect pick me up romcom for fans of Beth O’Leary, Sophie Kinsella and Sophie Ranald! Sally is a classic romantic and Harry is a classic cynic, but when a drunken bet leads the new flatmates to (badly) recreate ‘the lift’ from Dirty Dancing, and the video goes viral (#EpicRomcomReenactmentFailure), they both realise there’s potential financial benefit in blundering their way through the romcom lexicon for their suddenly vast social media following. Now, as Harry and Sally bring major romcom moments to new life – including recreating that classic diner scene – their faking it turns to making…out and suddenly they’re living a real life romcom of their own! But like all the greatest love stories, the road to happily ever after is paved with unexpected challenges for this hero and heroine…

I loved The Last Orphan by Gregg Hurwitz. I love the whole series so much I’m trying to talk my husband into reading it. It’s a great action thriller with a main character that is so complex he never fails to increasingly intrigue me.

Evan Smoak returns in The Last Orphan, the latest New York Times bestselling Orphan X thriller–when everything changes and everything is at risk. As a child, Evan Smoak was plucked out of a group home, raised and trained as an off-the-books assassin for the government as part of the Orphan program. When he broke with the program and went deep underground, he left with a lot of secrets in his head that the government would do anything to make sure never got out. When he remade himself as The Nowhere Man, dedicated to helping the most desperate in their times of trouble, Evan found himself slowly back on the government’s radar. Having eliminated most of the Orphans in the program, the government will stop at nothing to eliminate the threat they see in Evan. But Orphan X has always been several steps ahead of his pursuers. Until he makes one little mistake… Now the President has him in her control and offers Evan a deal – eliminate a rich, powerful man she says is too dangerous to live and, in turn, she’ll let Evan survive. But when Evan left the Program he swore to only use his skills against those who really deserve it. Now he has to decide what’s more important – his principles or his life.

I’ve got to be honest – the title The Shamshine Blind does nothing to attract me to the book. Nor does the cover. But the book description blows me away. I’m hoping that the description is more telling than the rest of it and that I love it!

A beguiling blend of noir detective story and science fiction perfect for fans of Michael Chabon and Emily St. John Mandel, this unputdownable debut imagines a world where emotions have been weaponized, and a small-town law enforcement agent uncovers a conspiracy to take down what’s left of American democracy. In an alternate 2009, the United States has been a second-rate power for a quarter of a century, ever since Argentina’s victory in the Falkland’s War thanks to their development of “psychopigments.” Created as weapons, these colorful chemicals can produce almost any human emotion upon contact, and they have been embraced in the US as both pharmaceutical cure-alls and popular recreational drugs. Black market traders illegally sell everything from Blackberry Purple (which causes terror) to Sunshine Yellow (which delivers happiness). Psychopigment Enforcement Agent Kay Curtida works a beat in Daly City, just outside the ruins of San Francisco, chasing down smalltime crooks. But when an old friend shows up with a tantalizing lead on a career-making case, Curtida’s humdrum existence suddenly gets a boost. Little does she know that this case will send her down a tangled path of conspiracy and lead to an overdue reckoning with her family and with the truth of her own emotions. Told in the voice of a funny, brooding, Latinx Sam Spade, The Shamshine Blind is “a rip-roaring beautifully crafted mash-up of cop noir, sci-fi, and alt-history that left me dazzled by its prescience and literary zing” (Leah Hampton, author of F*ckface).

What are you reading? Do you love it?

  2. I agree with you that the cover and title of The Shamshine Blind do nothing for me, Tessa. But the blurb sure is interesting. I hope it’s as compelling as it seems. The Last Orphan sounds good – trying to get your hubby to read it is a great endorsement. Have fun with the new one. 🙂

  4. I think your hubby would love Evan Smoak, too. The series is high octane. I’m with you about the cover The Shamshine Blind as it’s rather curious and doesn’t seem to best reflect the story. Hope it turns out well. Love that Dirty Dancing nod!

    Happy reading, Tessa💜

  5. You’re right about The Shamshine Blind – that cover does nothing for me. I loved the romcom references in the first book. When I read the names Harry and Sally, I thought, really? Sounds like a fun one.
