Have you ever had a week where you were so busy that it just was a total blur, even while you were living it? That’s how last week was for me. I had to work a little more than double the amount of time that I normally do plus my normal reading, writing reviews, blogging and social media. But it’s over now, so “whew!”

My baby girl is at the 911 desk for the first time today. She finally finished her “before answering calls” training on Friday and this is her first day being part of the real thing. She has to be there by 6:45am which has her doing all kinds of groaning and fussing – to which I reminded her I worked at a high school south of Charlotte (we live 15 miles or so north of the city) and had to be there at 6:30 am. I’m such a mom. 😂

That 800 page book I’m reading (Wayward by Chuck Wendig) has had me reading almost nonstop for the rest of this week. Luckily it’s very compelling.

So, that was my week – how was yours?

I was emailed a bunch of “read now” romcoms from St. Martin’s Press this week and one book from Random House. They all sound very good!

In April Asher’s next Supernatural Singles novel, Not Your Ex’s Hexes, a one-night-stand between a willful witch and a broody half-demon conjures an adventure that wouldn’t be complete without several magical mishaps. For her entire life, Rose Maxwell trained to become the next Prima on the Supernatural Council. Now that she’s stepped down, it’s time for this witch to focus on herself. And not think about her impulsive one-night stand with Damian Adams, a half-Demon Veterinarian who she can’t get out of her head. Neither of them is looking for a relationship. But when Rose is sentenced to community service at Damian’s animal sanctuary it becomes impossible for them to ignore their sparking attraction. A friends-with-benefits, no feelings, no strings arrangement works perfectly for them both. After a sequence of dead-end jobs, it’s not until Rose tangos with two snarly demons that she thinks she’s finally found her path. However, this puts Damian back on the periphery of a world he thought he left behind. He doesn’t approve of Rose becoming a Hunter, but if there’s one thing he’s learned about the stubborn witch, it was telling her not to do something was one sure-fire way to make sure she did. Working—and sleeping—together awakens feelings Damian never knew he had…and shouldn’t have. Because thanks to his ex’s hex, if he falls in love, he’ll not only lose his heart—but his humanity.

In Mr. & Mrs. Witch, the next novel from bestselling author Gwenda Bond, a couple discovers at the altar the surprising secret identities they’ve kept from each other. Savannah Wilde is a witch, a very powerful one—an identity that only her fellow witches know. Following a whirlwind romance that surprised herself and her family, Savvy is all set to marry the love of her life. But she isn’t the only one with a secret that needs to be kept, even from her soon-to-be husband. Griffin Carter is a top agent for a clandestine organization that, well, used to primarily hunt witches, but now mainly tries to shut down supernatural threats their own way. He can’t wait to lay his eyes on the woman he’s about to spend the rest of his life with. As Savvy walks down the aisle to Griffin, the wedding quickly goes from blessed day to shit show when their true identities are revealed. To say there’s bad blood between their factions is putting it mildly. Savvy and Griffin are tasked to take the other out, but when they discover a secret that could take down both of their agencies, they realize the only way to survive is to team up. With assassins hot on their trail, will Savvy and Griffin make it out alive to try again at ‘I do’?

Trish Doller’s idyllic romance Off the Map proves sometimes a wrong turn can lead to the exact right destination. On the road to love, you don’t need a GPS… Carla Black’s life motto is “here for a good time, not for a long time.” She’s been traveling the world on her own in her vintage Jeep Wrangler for nearly a decade, stopping only long enough to replenish her adventure fund. She doesn’t do love and she doesn’t ever go home. Eamon Sullivan is a modern-day cartographer who creates digital maps. His work helps people find their way, but he’s the one who’s lost his sense of direction. He’s unhappy at work, recently dumped, and his one big dream is stalled out—literally. Fate throws them together when Carla arrives in Dublin for her best friend’s wedding and Eamon is tasked with picking her up from the airport. But what should be a simple drive across Ireland quickly becomes complicated with chemistry-filled detours, unexpected feelings, and a chance at love – if only they choose it.

“Uniquely charming! With her delightful characters, Biller builds an irresistible world inside a Viennese Victorian-era hotel that is equal parts screwball comedy, epic love story, and thrilling mystery. An utterly captivating novel about the power of fate.” – Joanna Shupe, USA Today bestselling author of The Fifth Avenue Rebels series Diana Biller’s Hotel of Secrets is chock full of banter-filled shenanigans, must-have-you kisses, and romance certain to light a fire in the hearts of readers everywhere. During ball season, anything can happen—even love. It’s ball season in Vienna, and Maria Wallner only wants one thing: to restore her family’s hotel, the Hotel Wallner, to its former glory. She’s not going to let anything get in her way – not her parents’ three-decade-long affair; not seemingly-random attacks by masked assassins; and especially not the broad-shouldered American foreign agent who’s saved her life two times already. No matter how luscious his mouth is. Eli Whittaker also only wants one thing: to find out who is selling American secret codes across Europe, arrest them, and go home to his sensible life in Washington, DC. He has one lead – a letter the culprit sent from a Viennese hotel. But when he arrives in Vienna, he is immediately swept up into a chaotic whirlwind of balls, spies, waltzes, and beautiful hotelkeepers who seem to constantly find themselves in danger. He disapproves of all of it! But his disapproval is tested as he slowly falls deeper into the chaos – and as his attraction to said hotelkeeper grows. “With prose to match the sumptuous setting of 1870s Vienna, Hotel of Secrets is an exquisite and decadent read. Diana Biller breathes new life into historical romance with writing that is singularly lush, deeply romantic, and transportive. Readers will get swept away by the combination of nail-biting intrigue and whole-hearted passion.” – Rosie Danan, bestselling author of The Roommate

A scammer as alluring as she is elusive irrevocably upends the lives of two strangers in this gripping novel from the acclaimed author of The Best Kind of People. After the death of her wife, Shelby is suffering from prolonged grief. She’s increasingly isolated, irritated by her family’s stoicism and her friends’ reliance on the toxic positivity of self-help culture. Then, in a grief support group, she meets Cammie, who gives her permission to express her most hopeless, hideous feelings. Cammie is charismatic and unlike anyone Shelby has ever met. She’s also recovering from cancer and going through several other calamities. Shelby puts all her energy into helping Cammie thrive—until her intuition tells her that something isn’t right. Gibson is fresh from divorce, almost forty, and deeply depressed. Then he falls in love with Cammie. Not only is he having the best sex of his life with a woman so attractive he’s stunned she even glanced his way, he feels truly known for the first time in his life. But Gibson’s friends are wary of Cammie, and eventually he, too, has to admit that all the drama in Cammie’s life can feel a bit over the top. When Gibson and Shelby meet, they realize Cammie’s stories don’t always add up. In fact, they’re far from the truth. But what kind of a person would lie about having cancer? And what does it say about Shelby and Gibson that they fell for it? From the author of The Best Kind of People and The Spectacular comes a sharp, emotional novel about lies, liars, and the people who love them.

I’m hoping to watch the new Enola Holmes movie on Netflix this week. We’ve been kept very busy with Peripheral on Amazon Prime, Great British Bake Off on Netflix, and The Mighty Ducks on Disney+ so I didn’t get a chance last week.

  1. Those kinds of weeks are always so hard. I’m glad you survived. That’s exciting for your daughter, even if she has to get up so early! I want to watch the new Enola Holmes movie too, but I want to rewatch the first one first. I’m hoping to get to them this week. I hope you have a relaxing week.

    1. It does sound intriguing. It could go so many different ways, so I’m very curious about which way the author chose.

  2. I know that feeling very well, when everything is a bit of a blur. Glad you got through it alright and hopefully have more time to read and do other fun stuff. How long time would it normally take you to get through an 800 page book?

    1. About 7 – 10 days if I read a normal amount the entire time. Normally what happens is that I start out with my normal pace and then it reaches a point where I can’t put it down, so I end up finishing it in 6 or 7 days. This time I only had 4 days before I needed to move on but I did it! Have a great week!

      1. Ok, that is impressive. Depending on the genre / writing style, it might take me months to get through such a long book. Admittedly, audio is also slower than actually reading.

        1. The audio was between 30-40 hours 😳. It doesn’t matter how long it takes as long as you’re enjoying the journey ❤️

  3. I hope your daughter loves her job! 911 is not easy, and it’s stressful, so remind her to take time to de-stress. I’m going ot have to look for Hotel of Secrets.

    1. It totally excites her. She comes home with so much energy. I’ve never seen her like that. But she is working out at the gym in the Police Headquarters when her shift is over and comes home and does fun stuff, so she is doing good so far with stress relief 🤞

  5. Sometimes those weeks that go by in a blur can feel pretty satisfying! I’m so happy for your daughter and the path she’s chosen. It’s not an easy one and kudos to her for giving it a shot.

Good luck with your reading, Tessa💜

    1. It excites her so much. I’ve never seen her so enthusiastic. When she got home today, she had way more energy than when she left. It’s some about the Police Headquarters that just fills a need in her. I saw it a couple of weeks ago too, when they did her training there for a few days. It’s very interesting.

  6. I also have Off the Map and I love that series. I want to watch Enola Holmes but after I finish The Crown and Yellowstone. I hope this week is calmer for you.

  7. Say to your daughter she needs to be proud of herself doing the job she does. I have not been on my blog since Thursday. My brother-in-law passed away and we went to his funeral. So proud of my daughter as we did a 5 hour drive on Thursday, another four hour drive on Friday, followed by a three hour drive home yesterday. It was a long drive, but worth it. I wasn’t ever going to miss being there for a man, who was there for everyone himself.

  8. What did you think of Enola Holmes 2? I thought it not nearly as good as the first one… but I may be in the minority 🙂

    1. I still haven’t gotten a chance to see it. I had to finish that 800 page book today, so I read, and read, and read. I’ll try to watch it as the week goes on. It looks different than the first from the trailers. I wasn’t sure what to make of that.

  9. Enola is also on my list. The new season of Yellowstone starts tonight, so that will be at the top of our list for the moment – one of the only things I can get hubby to watch. I know you’re excited for your daughter, Tessa. Good luck to her – that’s a stressful job!

  10. Good luck to your daughter. My son is 4 and was moaning this morning because we tried to wake him up at 7:05am this morning! He was never a morning baby and before he started school we would be getting up at 10am ish.

I want to watch Enola Holmes 2. It is on my list!

    Have a great week!
