Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there. We are originally from Delaware and Maryland where steamed crab feasts are common in the summer. So, I had a half bushel overnighted to us as a Father’s Day gift for my husband and we are enjoying them today! Yum!!!

It was super hot this week – nearing 100 degrees each day except yesterday. I’ve been mostly hiding from the heat and keeping my fingers crossed that the air conditioner keeps putting out its much needed cold air.

Yesterday, I helped host a Juneteenth celebration for my little town. We had a great turnout of people from the community with lots of good food, dancing, and a varied assortment of tents to explore.

I took a spill yesterday trying to quickly move out of the way of a falling hot curling iron. So I’m currently nursing a few nasty bruises and watching for any signs of a bleeding issue since I’m on blood thinners. I’m so clumsy 🙈.

How was your week?

Hailey Sharp has a one-track mind. Get By the Cup salad shop off the ground. Do literally everything possible to make it a success. Repeat. With a head full of entrepreneurial ideas and a bad ex in her rearview, her one and only focus is living life the way she wants to. No distractions. Wes Jansen never did understand the fuss about relationships. With a string of lackluster first dates and the pain from his parents’ angry divorce following him around, he’d much rather find someone who he likes, but won’t love. Companionship, not passion, is the name of the game. When Hailey and Wes find each other in a disastrous meet cute that wasn’t even intended for them, they embarrassingly go their separate ways. But when Wes finds Hailey to apologize for his behavior, they strike a friendship. Because that’s all this can be. Hailey doesn’t want any distractions. Wes doesn’t want to fall in love. What could possibly go wrong?
From the winner of the National Jewish Book Award—Ronald H. Balson’s An Affair of Spies tells of a spy mission to rescue a defector from Germany and prevent the Nazis from creating an atomic bomb. Nathan Silverman grew up in Berlin in the 1920s, the son of a homemaker and a theoretical physicist. His idyllic childhood was soon marred by increasing levels of bigotry against his family and the rest of the Jewish community, and after his uncle is arrested on Kristallnacht, he leaves Germany for New York City with only his mother’s wedding ring to sell for survival. While attending an evening course at Columbia in 1942, Nathan notices a recruitment poster on a university wall and decides to enlist in the military and help fight the Nazi regime. To his surprise, he is quickly selected for a special assignment; he is trained as a spy, and ordered to report to the Manhattan Project. There he learns that the Allies are racing to develop a nuclear weapon before the Nazis, and a German theoretical physicist is hoping to defect. The physicist was a friend of his father’s, and Nathan’s mission is to return to Berlin via France and smuggle him out of Europe. Nathan will be accompanied by Dr. Allison Fisher, a brilliant young scientist who can speak French; he travels to her lab at the University of Chicago for a crash course in nuclear physics, then they embark on their adventure. Nathan and Allison soon develop feelings for one another, but as their relationship deepens they move ever closer to their dangerous goal. Will they be able to escape Europe with the defector and start a new life together, or will they fail their mission and become two more casualties of war? An Affair of Spies is an action-packed tale of heroism and love in the face of unspeakable evil. Author Ronald H. Balson has applied his unmatched talent for evocative and painstakingly authentic storytelling to the high-stakes world of espionage and created his most thrilling novel yet.
A curmudgeonly professor journeys to a small town in the far north to study faerie folklore and discovers dark fae magic, friendship, and love, in this heartwarming and enchanting fantasy. Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world’s first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party—or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people. So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, get in the middle of Emily’s research, and utterly confound and frustrate her. But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones—the most elusive of all faeries—lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she’ll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all—her own heart.

I saw Red Notice promoted on Netflix last week and decided to watch it this weekend. With the three actors shown, it seemed like a safe bet. And it was. It’s light and entertaining with Reynold’s wit and some laugh out loud moments.

  1. It is the first heat wave of the year here in Germany. Glad you had a wonderful week and Father´s Day. We celebrated that day a few weeks ago. Have a wonderful new week and enjoy your weekend.

    1. I have a past student in Germany now and she’s been posting about how hot it is and how there’s no air conditioning. Hopefully the heat will break soon.

    1. I’m still a bit sore but the bruises are stable and I’m almost positive I didn’t hit my head hard enough to cause a brain bleed which is always a danger. Interestingly, the arm that had the blood clot in it a few years ago (and the reason I have to take the blood thinners) is the arm that has the most concerning bruise. But I’m sure that it’s just a coincidence.

  2. I’ll definitely add A Guide To Being Just Friends on my TBR! Yess it’s been hot for us too – this has been the hottest week of the year so far 😂 Have a great weekend of celebrating!

  3. We don’t really have heat waves in England. Well, not for long anyway. We are not best equipped for the heat. My daughter and son went out yesterday and got gifts for their dad. A watch, a little skull coffin with sweets inside and two packs of diet cokes.

  4. Ouch. The fall sounds nasty, I hope you are okay. The summer is just setting in here, and I prepared for the worst, at least mentally. I hope you have a great week ahead.

    1. It’s always such a rough thing when you fall as an adult, isn’t it? Kids just bounce right up and go on, but when you are an adult, your body complains loudly and for a few days. I think all is well. Bruises look stable and soreness is lingering but getting better. Hope you have a wonderful week!

  5. Oh no Tessa, are you OK after your fall? It was hot here for a couple of days and I am not built for it (and we don’t have air conditioning in our houses either!) It’s cooler today and I’m hoping it stays that way!!! ❤️

    1. Air conditioning is not very common in Europe, is it? I’ve heard that there is not any air conditioning at all but that was from an American in Germany who was missing what we take for granted here.

I’m okay I think. My back and arm got the worst of it, but my bruises have been stable and I’m almost positive I didn’t hit my head hard enough to cause a brain bleed. We’ve been diligently keeping our eye out for the development of any symptoms. Luckily,I had just put my hair up in a pony tail, and where my head hit was right at the spot, so it was pretty padded with my thick hair and the the surface I think I hit was the one that had give and not the hard unforgiving tiles. Crazy! Falling as an adult is very frustrating and impactful. I envy children the ability to bounce right up and be fine.

      1. I hope you’re ok today (I had a migraine yesterday so was absent!)

We don’t have air conditioning in houses but most shops and new offices do ❤️

  6. Hope you’re Ok after your fall. I know how messy blood thinners can make things. I’m looking forward to your review of The Final Strife.

    1. Blood thinners make some of the simplest things so scary. Interestingly, the arm that developed a blood clot a few years ago (and the reason I have to take the blood thinners) was the one with the most concerning bruise. It hasn’t changed much in 24 hours though, so I should be okay. Crazy! I total envy kids and there ability to bounce right up and continue on after a fall.

  7. Ooo half a bushel of steamed crabs sounds delicious and that Juneteenth town party sounds great, too. Sorry to hear about your fall though. I hope you don’t anything worse than a few bruises and that they heal quickly. My week has been a blur of working at school and youth club, and then getting myself home, fed and to bed. Take care and happy reading. 🙂

    1. My bruises look stable, so mostly I’m just sore. And the Juneteenth celebration was wonderful. I love how the community comes together for it. Hope you have a great week!

  8. I hope your heat is headed our way. Yesterday and today feel like fall, and I so want to use my pool!

I am sorry to hear about your fall. That’s scary, especially if you’re on blood thinners. Sounds like you are taking plenty of precautions though, so good for you.

Encyclopedia of Faeries sounds like fun and so does Red Notice, which I hadn’t heard of.
And now I want hardshell crabs, LOL!

    1. The crabs were so yummy! Things changed so much when they became available for delivery down here. We usually enjoy them once or twice per summer now, and it makes us very happy!

Blood thinners make the simplest things so scary, but then getting more blood clots if I don’t take them is more scary, so I’ll just have to continue to be as careful as possible. The bruise I was most concerned about has been stable, so now I’m just sore. Falling as an adult is so much harder than it was as a kid, isn’t it?

And you are welcome to our heat. Maybe if we both wish for it, it’ll happen ☺️

  9. I love RED NOTICE. I thought it was so much fun and all three actors were great in their roles.

I’m jealous of the crabs you’re eating for Father’s Day. I love crab, but my husband is deathly allergic to shellfish. I can’t eat it either because if it’s on my breath, he still reacts and goes into anaphylaxis. I only eat shellfish when either he or I are out of town.

    1. Oh, I don’t know what I’d do if either of us had a shellfish allergy. I guess I’d get used to it but I would miss steamed crabs from time to time. And Red Notice was so fun! We enjoyed it too ❤️

  10. Hope you enjoyed the crab feast and that your bumps are not too bad. I have a lovely scar on my thigh from a hot curling iron I dropped – I was sitting down so unable to move out the way. You have a great selection of books to enjoy – fingers crossed the AC holds out!

    1. My curling iron is probably the most dangerous thing in my bathroom. It loves to fall when I least expect it and always when it’s hot. All my injuries have been stable today, so now I just need the soreness to go away. Falling when you’re an adult sucks!

  11. Hope everything is OK after the fall Tessa!! We’ve had some hot days here too, don’t have AC but did had the fans on all day, but the temperature has now dropped to a more of comfortable one.

Hope you have a great week ahead!!

    1. I’m glad to hear you’re back to more comfortable temps. I know that had to be horribly uncomfortable. And my bruises are stable, I’m just sore. Falling when your an adult causes so much more pain than when you’re a kid. I envy kids the ability to bounce back up.

  12. Temps have been high here also, although the weekend was nice. But we’re back to 90s and into the 100s for the rest of the week. Hope there are no complications from your fall, Tessa!

    1. I’m mostly better already. I was so surprised to wake up this morning and realize I was no longer feeling pain everywhere. The temps are going to be hot here too. Bleh!

  14. So, I’m a week late reading this, but I’m glad I did. Besides your fall, (I hope you are okay now) and the heat, it sounds like a great week. A crab feast sounds yummy. I just saw that movie promoted on Netflix today, so I hope to watch it this week.
