#BookBloggerHop | Covers On or Off?

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blog.

Do you prefer to leave book jackets on or off while reading?

(submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

This is a pretty straightforward question. When I read a hardback book, I usually start off with the cover on and I’ve even been known to use the flaps as a bookmark.

If the cover starts flapping around while I’m reading, that’s the point where I take it off until I’m finished reading. Flapping covers annoy me to no end. Which, admittedly, might be a direct result of using them to hold my place in a book.

  1. Definitely off! I can’t manage the book and the cover at the same time, so the cover always slips off. Flapping covers annoy me, too, and I noticed it would slowly start to pull off, which always distracted me from the story, so now they come off right away.

  2. I’m always worried that I’m going to rip or ruin my dust jacket in some way so I always take them off! I’ve tried reading with them on before too but not only am I scared it’ll get ruined but they tend to slip up and down whenever I move or touch the book and it gets too frustrating, lol!

  3. If I am reading a book with a jacket, I normally keep it on. I used to use the flap as a bookmark, but I don’t do that anymore, I use one of the many bookmarks I have around the house. I will take it off if it is damaged (ripped) and I don’t want to make it worse.

  4. If I’m just starting a book, I may use the jacket flap as a bookmark, but then take the cover off soon after. My dad still turns down page corners, and I cringe every time I see it!

  5. It definitely depends on where I’m reading it. I always take the jacket off if I’m reading in the bath, for instance. But most of the time I’ll leave it on otherwise unless it’s loose and getting on my nerves.

  6. My answer is identical to yours, Tessa. But I never considered that using the flap as a bookmark might be the cause of my problem. Very insightful!

    1. You can’t have a cover that’s annoying when your trying to concentrate on a good story. ❤️

  7. Always off, the jacket is more fragile than the book and I want to keep my jackets in pristine condition 😄

  8. I so rarely read a hardback that I had to think about this…. I’m pretty sure I don’t take off the jacket, but no particular reason!

  9. i’ve always read with them on, and it wasn’t until recently i discovered that people remove them. i’ve started removing them too as i noticed it protects the jacket easier (and the jacket hides any flaws on the hardcover itself).

  10. I can’t say I have ever thought about this, as I rarely read hardbacks and the few times I have they didn’t tend to have a dust jacket on, however I think it flapping about would be pretty annoying! 😅
