The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blog.

Do you prefer to leave book jackets on or off while reading?
(submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

This is a pretty straightforward question. When I read a hardback book, I usually start off with the cover on and I’ve even been known to use the flaps as a bookmark.
If the cover starts flapping around while I’m reading, that’s the point where I take it off until I’m finished reading. Flapping covers annoy me to no end. Which, admittedly, might be a direct result of using them to hold my place in a book.
Do you prefer to leave book jackets on or off while reading?

Definitely off! I can’t manage the book and the cover at the same time, so the cover always slips off. Flapping covers annoy me, too, and I noticed it would slowly start to pull off, which always distracted me from the story, so now they come off right away.

They are pretty to look at but not all that practical.

I don’t read many hardback books as the covers do annoy me, so I would usually try and keep them on but then take them off 😊

I’m always worried that I’m going to rip or ruin my dust jacket in some way so I always take them off! I’ve tried reading with them on before too but not only am I scared it’ll get ruined but they tend to slip up and down whenever I move or touch the book and it gets too frustrating, lol!

I would definitely take them off then. I’d be horrified to rip one.

Jacket off for me! I had an unfortunate ripping incident once and it still haunts me now!!!!

If I am reading a book with a jacket, I normally keep it on. I used to use the flap as a bookmark, but I don’t do that anymore, I use one of the many bookmarks I have around the house. I will take it off if it is damaged (ripped) and I don’t want to make it worse.

I would too. Damaged covers really upset me. Especially if a book should be delivered that way 😳

If I’m just starting a book, I may use the jacket flap as a bookmark, but then take the cover off soon after. My dad still turns down page corners, and I cringe every time I see it!

Ooo…no corner turn downs on hardbacks…that’s like nails on a chalkboard.

It definitely depends on where I’m reading it. I always take the jacket off if I’m reading in the bath, for instance. But most of the time I’ll leave it on otherwise unless it’s loose and getting on my nerves.

I get that. Too big of a chance it would slip off into the water.

What you said, Tessa, to a letter! I don’t read hardcovers anymore but when I did, my behavior was like yours.

Every one is while I read them but not very often anymore.

My answer is identical to yours, Tessa. But I never considered that using the flap as a bookmark might be the cause of my problem. Very insightful!

I’m like you, I’ll leave the jacket on until it drives me crazy!.

You can’t have a cover that’s annoying when your trying to concentrate on a good story. ❤️

I’m exactly the same – as long as they don’t keep sliding off I use them as a bookmark.

Always off, the jacket is more fragile than the book and I want to keep my jackets in pristine condition 😄

I love my covers to be in good shape too. They are often so pretty 😍

I so rarely read a hardback that I had to think about this…. I’m pretty sure I don’t take off the jacket, but no particular reason!

I still do from time to time ❤️

I leave them on, and use them as bookmarks too – unless the book is too big!

i’ve always read with them on, and it wasn’t until recently i discovered that people remove them. i’ve started removing them too as i noticed it protects the jacket easier (and the jacket hides any flaws on the hardcover itself).

I can’t say I have ever thought about this, as I rarely read hardbacks and the few times I have they didn’t tend to have a dust jacket on, however I think it flapping about would be pretty annoying! 😅

It’s very annoying for sure.
