#BookBloggerHop | Genres That I Refuse to Read

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blog.

What genre do you refuse to read and why?

I don’t think that there are any genres that I blanket refuse to read. There are some genres where I only read select sub-genres in, like romance. I used to love all kinds of romance – contemporary, historical, etc… but now I mostly just read romcoms from the romance genre.

I also do not read a lot of historical fiction unless it’s mixed with another genre. I enjoy historical fantasy and mystery/thrillers with a historical setting. Also the time period covered in historical fiction is important to me. I have certain periods that I love like the 1800s and earlier and some that I don’t like as much, like 1900 on.

I can’t knowingly read books where a pet dies or the pet’s human dies no matter the genre. Just the description of the book can cause tears. And horror dealing with ghosts and demons/hell is too scary for me though I can handle horror with a SciFy or Fantasy angle.

I also don’t gravitate toward books that are sad in nature. If I can tell it’s a tear-jerker from the description, I always walk away. And books that are classified as “literary fiction” don’t attract me though my degree is in English, so I have read more than my fair share of classic literature.

As you can see, I can’t discount any complete genre, though I do get picky within a genre.

      You know, I don’t even consider erotica when thinking about genres. I feel like such a book snob at the moment. ☺️

    I tend to read most fiction, but like you historical fiction just doesn’t grab my attention. I had to read the classics for a GCSE English course I was doing, and found them to be really difficult to read through. Most of the books I used to read involved the second world war, and female leads, often going through a struggle through some of their lives. I do read romance sometimes.

    I’m with you in not reading romance. But it’s tricky to cut out a whole genre. I like to give books a chance. I think there’s only one book I haven’t finished. I can’t believe you don’t like books where animals die – have you not read Michael Morpurgo? Definitely don’t read A Monster Calls – saddest book ever!

    I really don’t like anything where the gore, pain or suffering is for shock value only. I tend to mainly read sci fi and fantasy, with or without romance, dark romance and the occasional thriller/suspense.

      I ding books on gratuitousness all the time. Just tell me a story, don’t add anything just for the sake of having it when it’s not relevant or necessary.

    I hadn’t thought about sad books but I agree with you. I won’t generally read books that I know are going to be upsetting as I usually read for relaxation so being upset defeats the object a bit. However, now I’m not working so much, I’m prepared to be a bit more advnenturous.

    We’re nearly the same, but ghosts and demons don’t bother me at all. Usually anything involving harm to pets or children (especially on page) is a hard pass. Occasionally I come across those instances in books, and I skim through them.

      Oh, I forgot to put children. Yes, totally- harm to pets and children just shatters me. I even teared up when my husband explained to me what the new Channing Tatum movie is about. I think I’d be the only person in the theater crying during a movie classified as a comedy.

    I’m very picky of what I read. I will give many genres a chance, but the story has to grab me immediately.
    I’ll skip over any sexual scenes in book, but if there is too much, I’ll call it quits. I can’t read any books with disturbing content, although “disturbing” has to be defined by the individual.

    We’re quite similar in our reading preferences, Tessa, except I generally steer away from romance unless there’s a lot of other stuff going on in the book. I enjoy tear-jerkers but almost never pick them up. They’re an emotional investment that I’m rarely in the mood to undertake. Reading blogger books has expanded my exposure to different genres, which has been super fun. Happy Reading!

      I agree – tear-jerkers are not an emotional investment that I’m rarely in the mood to,take either. I always say that life offers enough emotional stuff that I can’t escape, I don’t want it in the books I read too ❤️

    Loved reading your response, Tessa💜 It’s great when you’ve figured out your reading tastes so well. I read every genre, too, and cannot eliminate any wholesale. But, horror is well out of my comfort zone. I look to friends for guidance.

    I rediscovered the romance genre a little over ten years ago after having been turned off by the stuff from the 80s. I read everything but am picky about my authors.

    Bring them all!

    Erotica and Horror are the genres I won’t read. I know there is some excellent horror out there, but I will have nightmares, so I won’t read it.

      I can totally understand that. I often have the same thoughts myself. And, you know, I never considered Erotica when thinking about genres. I’ve termed myself a book snob because I look past that type of book 😂

    I’m with you about pets and animals. I can’t read about it in books and I don’t want to see it in films. I don’t think this is a genre but I can’t read any heavy medical/illness stuff either. It tends to trigger my anxiety. But otherwise I’ll pretty much read anything!

    I’m not a huge fan of Mills & Boon/Harlequin style romance, and I can’t see myself ever reading a Western. I’m not a huge fan of comics/graphic novels/manga because I can’t follow the story and I get frustrated

    An interesting question… I won’t read romances (unless the romance is a small part of another genre), westerns, detective fiction, or war. Literary fiction seems to be a style rather than a genre so I read what it’s about and sample the style before deciding to read it.

      Literary fiction can be a style but I have also seen books marked as that as a genre. Now, I’m wondering how they make that judgement 🤷🏻‍♀️

        Yeah I did a whole post about that a while ago 😀 in my opinion it’s not a genre, it could pretty much describe anything on any topic so it’s not helpful!

    I have/would never read an erotic book, if that counts as a genre, such as Fifty Shades of Grey. I also rarely read romance, unless its blended with a genre I love e.g. fantasy, mystery or historical. Like you, I am also not attracted to books described as ‘literary fiction’ either.

      I don’t read erotica either. To such a degree that I didn’t even think of it when writing the post. Lol. I don’t know that I really do think of it as a true genre though I think technically it is.

    I think I have read most genres at least once, but there are some I choose not to read unless I read a really good review, so decide to give it a try. I steer clear for the most part from Horror, Sci-Fi, Dystopia, Supernatural (vampires, werewolves, shifters etc) and erotica. I am pretty much okay with other genres which is why my TBR is so long.
