What Am I Reading This Week – February 2, 2022? #WWWWednesday #amreading #CurrentlyReading

I will be starting Dark Horse today, and I am very excited to be back with Orphan X. The last book was the first I read in this series, and it blew me away. One day I will be able to read the first 4 books ☺️

Gregg Hurwitz’s New York Times bestselling series returns when Orphan X faces his most challenging mission ever in Dark Horse. Evan Smoak is a man with many identities and a challenging past. As Orphan X, he was a government assassin for the off-the-books Orphan Program. After he broke with the Program, he adopted a new name and a new mission–The Nowhere Man, helping the most desperate in their times of trouble. Having just survived an attack on his life and the complete devastation of his base of operations, as well as his complicated (and deepening) relationship with his neighbor Mia Hall, Evan isn’t interested in taking on a new mission. But one finds him anyway. Aragon Urrea is a kingpin of a major drug-dealing operation in South Texas. He’s also the patron of the local area–supplying employment in legitimate operations, providing help to the helpless, rough justice to the downtrodden, and a future to a people normally with little hope. He’s complicated–a not completely good man, who does bad things for often good reasons. However, for all his money and power, he is helpless when one of the most vicious cartels kidnaps his innocent eighteen year old daughter, spiriting her away into the armored complex that is their headquarters in Mexico. With no other way to rescue his daughter, he turns to The Nowhere Man. Now not only must Evan figure out how to get into the impregnable fortress of a heavily armed, deeply paranoid cartel leader, but he must decide if he should help a very bad man–no matter how just the cause.

I have just a small bit left to read of The Night She Went Missing and I’ve really enjoyed it. The way it’s formatted has kept my attention focused from page 1. It’s a pretty quick read.

  • Genre: Psychological / Domestic Thriller
  • Pages: 336 pages
  • Publisher: MIRA

An intriguing and twisty domestic suspense about loyalty and deceit in a tight-knit Texas community where parents are known to behave badly and people are not always who they appear to be. Emily, a popular but bookish prep school senior, goes missing after a night out with friends. She was last seen leaving a party with Alex, a football player with a dubious reputation. But no one is talking. Now three mothers, Catherine, Leslie and Morgan, friends turned frenemies, have their lives turned upside down as they are forced to look to their own children—and each other’s—for answers to questions they don’t want to ask. Each mother is sure she knows who is responsible, but they all have their own secrets to keep and reputations to protect. And the lies they tell themselves and each other may just have the potential to be lethal in this riveting debut.

I love a MG book every once in a while, and I have posted my review of The Beast and the Bethany today, so be sure to look for it.

  • Genre: MG Fantasy
  • Pages: 240 pages
  • Publisher: Farshore
  • Publication Date: September 30, 2021
Once upon a very badly behaved time, 511-year-old Ebenezer kept a beast in his attic. He would feed the beast all manner of objects and creatures and in return the beast would vomit him up expensive presents. But then The Bethany arrived … Now notorious prankster Bethany, along with her new feathery friend Claudette, is determined that she and Ebenezer are going to DE-BEAST their lives and Do Good. But Bethany finds that being a notorious prankster makes it hard to get taken on for voluntary work. And Ebenezer is secretly missing the beast’s vomity gifts. And neither of them are all that sure what ‘good people’ do anyway … Then there’s Claudette, who’s not been feeling herself recently. Has she eaten something that has DISAGREED with her? The Beast and the Bethany has all the classic macabre humour of Roald Dahl with the warmth and charm of Despicable Me, finished off with a gleeful bite of Little Shop of Horrors!

I’ll be honest, I don’t always do well with a book of short stories. I just have trouble staying focused through them all. But how could I resist a book full of scify and fantasy short stories. It’s definitely worth giving it a try.

I’m reading an old book right now–Most Likely to Die. It’s told in three parts by three different authors, Lisa Jackson being the lead author. It’s definitely been entertaining. I’m almost finished and am waiting for the big reveal of the killer/stalker!
