#WWWWednesday: What Are You Reading This Week – October 13, 2021?

Welcome to WWW Wednesday! This meme was formerly hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and revived on Taking on a World of Words.

I’ve started Lies My Memory Told Me but haven’t gotten very far yet. It is much different than I expected with a sci-fy/dystopian element added to the mystery/thriller story.

  • Genre: YA Psychological Thriller
  • Pages: 320 pgs.
  • Publisher: Inkyard Press (Harlequin Trade)
  • Publication Date: October 19, 2021
From the thrilling voice of Sacha Wunsch comes a heart-stopping psychological mystery in a world where memories can be shared—and one girl can’t trust any of them. Enhanced Memory changed everything. By sharing someone else’s memory, you can experience anything and everything with no risk at all: learn any skill instantly, travel the world from home, and safeguard all your most treasured secrets forever. Nova’s parents invented this technology, and it’s slowly taking over their lives. Nova doesn’t mind—mostly. She knows Enhanced Memory is a gift. But Kade says Nova doesn’t know the costs of this technology that’s taken the world by storm. Kade runs a secret vlog cataloging real experiences, is always on the move, and is strangely afraid of Nova—even though she feels more comfortable with him than she ever has with anyone. Suddenly there are things Nova can’t stop noticing: the way her parents don’t meet her eyes anymore, the questions no one wants her to ask, and the relentless feeling that there’s something she’s forgotten…

When I saw In Every Generation on Disney Hyperion’s NetGalley page I just had to request it because I’m a HUGE (!!!) Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. They just approved my request on Monday, and I immediately started reading it. I might be putting myself in a pickle at some point with my review schedule but it’s BUFFY! so it just had to be read NOW!!! I love getting back in touch with all the original characters along with meeting the new generation.

  • Genre: YA Paranormal Fantasy
  • Pages: 400 pgs
  • Publisher: Disney Hyperion
  • Publication Date: January 4, 2022
The first in an all-new series by New York Times best-selling author Kendare Blake continues the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer featuring the next generation of Scoobies and Slayers who must defeat a powerful new evil. A new Slayer for a new generation… Frankie Rosenberg is passionate about the environment, a sophomore at New Sunnydale High School, and the daughter of the most powerful witch in Sunnydale history. Her mom, Willow, is slowly teaching her magic on the condition that she use it to better the world. But Frankie’s happily quiet life is upended when new girl Hailey shows up with news that the annual Slayer convention has been the target of an attack, and all the Slayers—including Buffy, Faith, and Hailey’s older sister Vi—might be dead. That means it’s time for this generation’s Slayer to be born. But being the first ever Slayer-Witch means learning how to wield a stake while trying to control her budding powers. With the help of Hailey, a werewolf named Jake, and a hot but nerdy sage demon, Frankie must become the Slayer, prevent the Hellmouth from opening again, and find out what happened to her Aunt Buffy, before she’s next. Get ready for a whole new story within the world of Buffy!/div>

I’m finally jumping out of YA fiction and back into adult fiction for a bit and am so excited to read this sci-fy dystopian story. I loved Road Out of Winter and this new story sounds even better than that one.

  • Genre: Sci-Fy/Dystopian
  • Pages: 384 pgs
  • Publisher: MIRA (Harlequin Trade)
  • Publication Date: October 26, 2021
“This thought-provoking apocalypse noir fires on all cylinders.” –Publishers Weekly starred review. From the author of Road Out of Winter, winner of the 2021 Philip K. Dick Award, comes a resonant, visionary novel about the power of art and the sacrifices we are willing to make for the ones we love. A few generations from now, the coastlines of the continent have been redrawn by floods and tides. Global powers have agreed to not produce any new plastics, and what is left has become valuable: garbage is currency. In the region-wide junkyard that Appalachia has become, Coral is a “plucker,” pulling plastic from the rivers and woods. She’s stuck in Trashlands, a dump named for the strip club at its edge, where the local women dance for an endless loop of strangers and the club’s violent owner rules as unofficial mayor. Amid the polluted landscape, Coral works desperately to save up enough to rescue her child from the recycling factories, where he is forced to work. In her stolen free hours, she does something that seems impossible in this place: Coral makes art. When a reporter from a struggling city on the coast arrives in Trashlands, Coral is presented with an opportunity to change her life. But is it possible to choose a future for herself? Told in shifting perspectives, Trashlands is a beautifully drawn and wildly imaginative tale of a parent’s journey, a story of community and humanity in a changed world. “A harrowing tale that is a natural extension of our current climate crisis…. Highly recommended.” –Booklist, starred review.

    1. The author does an excellent job of capturing the personalities and even voices of the original characters and she took on the tone, pace, and wit on the early seasons. The fact that she stays true to the tv series gets big thumbs up 👍

  1. Your enthusiasm for the Buffy book leaps through the screen, LOL. Would you believe I never saw a single episode of the show? I think I’m probably one of the very few who hasn’t. I know it has a huge and diehard following.

I started reading The Mother Next Door last night. Only 24% into the book, but already loving it!

    1. I only knew about In Every Generation because I occasionally explore Disney Hyperion’s offerings on NetGalley. Maybe it will be promoted more as the publication day grows closer. It needs to be! I found it to be such a treat ❤️
