This week was pretty quiet. Great news is we received both bed frames and mattresses and hubby spent a good portion of yesterday getting them all put together and set-up. Yay! My daughters have a place to sleep again when they come home here and there. Now, the fun part – getting Ikea to credit my credit card for the beds and mattresses that I originally ordered but that were cancelled – parts by them and parts by me. But, that’s a problem for another day. I have the credit card company working on it because that seemed like the safest route.

Next weekend is a busy weekend. Friday, we will pack up a U-Haul with all the furniture, etc… my daughters wanted from their rooms and storage and drive it up to Durham. We have movers scheduled up there to unload the U-Haul and carry everything up by stairs to their third floor apartment. Nothing can go wrong with all of this right? We’ve moved enough to know to expect the unexpected. But maybe we’ll get lucky. It happens. I haven’t won the NC million dollar lottery for people who have gotten the Covid vaccine yet, but that should be no reflection on the luck that I generate, right?

Set in the snowy northern forests of an imagined prehistoric world, Fireborn is the middle-grade debut of the decade. At turns exciting, funny and heart wrenchingly sad, it marks the introduction of an unstoppable new voice in children’s storytelling. Twelve has spoken the Pledge and now she is a Huntling. She has given up her name to train in the art of fighting monsters and keeping the peace, and she won’t get to choose a new one until she has earned it. But when the Lodge’s walls are breached for the first time, and a little girl is taken, Twelve is the only one interested in going after a child . . . Teaming up with Dog, the Stone Guardian of the Lodge, Twelve ends up on an epic adventure that will change her life, her name – and her entire world.
From its creepy town mascot to the story of its cursed waterfall, Burden Falls is a small town dripping with superstition. Ava Thorn knows this well – since the horrific accident she witnessed a year ago, she’s been plagued by nightmares. But when someone close to her is brutally murdered and Ava is the primary suspect, she starts to wonder if the legends surrounding the town are more fact than fiction. Whatever secrets Burden Falls is hiding, there’s a killer on the loose, and they have a vendetta against the Thorns…
What if the Lift driver who finds your cheating boyfriend’s phone holds the directions to true love? ‘Who are you and why do you have my boyfriend’s phone?’ ‘He left it in my car. You must be the blonde in the red dress? I’m the Lift driver who dropped you two off earlier.’ And with these words, the life of the brunette and t-shirt wearing Maya Maas is turned upside down. Having planned to surprise her boyfriend, she finds herself single and stranded in an unknown city on her birthday. So when the mystery driver rescues Maya with the suggestion that she cheers herself up at a nearby beach town, she jumps at the chance to get things back on track. She wasn’t expecting a personalised itinerary or the easy companionship that comes from opening up to a stranger via text, let alone the possibility it might grow into something more…
A charmingly eccentric hotel maid discovers a guest murdered in his bed. Solving the mystery will turn her once orderly world upside down in this utterly original debut. Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter–she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection. But Molly’s orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself very dead in his bed. Before she knows what’s happening, Molly’s unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black–but will they be able to find the real killer before it’s too late? A Clue-like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different–and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.
In Kate Elliott’s Servant Mage, a lowly fire mage finds herself entangled in an empire-spanning conspiracy on her way to discovering her true power. They choose their laws to secure their power. Fellion is a Lamplighter, able to provide illumination through magic. A group of rebel Monarchists free her from indentured servitude and take her on a journey to rescue trapped compatriots from an underground complex of mines. Along the way they get caught up in a conspiracy to kill the latest royal child and wipe out the Monarchist movement for good. But Fellion has more than just her Lamplighting skills up her sleeve…
From the author of One of Us Is Lying comes a brand-new pulse-pounding thriller. It’s Ferris Bueller’s Day Off with murder when three old friends relive an epic ditch day, and it goes horribly—and fatally—wrong. Ivy, Mateo, and Cal used to be close. Now all they have in common is Carlton High and the beginning of a very bad day. Type A Ivy lost a student council election to the class clown, and now she has to face the school, humiliated. Heartthrob Mateo is burned out—he’s been working two jobs since his family’s business failed. And outsider Cal just got stood up . . . again. So when Cal pulls into campus late for class and runs into Ivy and Mateo, it seems like the perfect opportunity to turn a bad day around. They’ll ditch and go into the city. Just the three of them, like old times. Except they’ve barely left the parking lot before they run out of things to say . . . . . . until they spot another Carlton High student skipping school—and follow him to the scene of his own murder. In one chance move, their day turns from dull to deadly. And it’s about to get worse. It turns out Ivy, Mateo, and Cal still have some things in common. They all have a connection to the dead kid. And they’re all hiding something. Now they’re all wondering—could it be that their chance reconnection wasn’t by chance after all?

Raised to be fierce dragon slayers, two sisters end up on opposite sides of the impending war when one sister forms an unlikely, magical bond with a dragon in this standalone YA contemporary fantasy that’s perfect for fans of Slayer and Sorcery of Thorns. Dani and Eden Rivera were both born to kill dragons, but the sisters couldn’t be more different. As she gets to know Nox, she realizes that everything she thought she knew about dragons is wrong. With Dani lost to the dragons, Eden turns to mysterious and alluring sorcerers to help save her sister. Now on opposite sides of the conflict, each sister will do whatever it takes to save the other. The new season of Big Brother started this week. My husband and I only started watching it a few years ago but now we are front and center when a new season starts. I also watched a few things on HBO Max. I have never seen the Titans, but they have been promoting season 3 which will drop next month, so it caught my eye. I watched part of season 1, so far. It’s DC – so it’s dark, violent, and a bit disturbing but also kind of interesting. But, on the side of HBO – the lighter family side, is the second Space Jam movie. I never thought they would make a second of this movie but they did. So to dispel the dark violence of the Titans, I watched it. It’s fun. Good message. Kids should love it. A few things in it for adults to chuckle at.

  1. You had a busy week, but at least the bed is up now. It was my last day at work on Friday, but I’ve never been that good at doing nothing. I’ve been editing my manuscript, I’m at Home in the Dark. I need it beta reading, but I’m not sure whether to send it directly to agents or get it beta read. It is a beautiful day today, but I took my dog out earlier today because it will be too hot for him later.

    1. I’ve heard that you should send it directly to agents and/or publishers. That they understand that it’s rough and can read past that. I think I heard that in a chat thing with a published author. Hope you have a productive week!

  2. Fingers crossed the credit card company gets your refund sorted quickly.

I watched the first season of Titan’s a year or two ago and I enjoyed it but it took forever for S2 to become available in the UK and it slipped off my radar… With S3 inbound, I may have a rewatch!

    1. Titans is very interesting. I just wish DC wasn’t always so dark. I can only stand to watch a couple of shows at a time. Have a great week!

  3. Good luck with the move and your IKEA credit! Sending you strong, good vibes that you have the best outcomes with both💜

I’m liking the sound of The Maid and am holding out for a hopeful audio version. I’m also loving The Meeting Point but they haven’t set up an audio version for that either. I’ve got time to wait on your review before I settle on the ebook version.

    Have a great week!

    1. My review will be posted on Aug. 22 – it’s part of a blog tour with The Write Reads. But of course I will probably talk about it on a WWW post sooner than that ❤️. I’m looking forward to both books! Positive vibes are always welcome 🙏. Have a great week!

I like the US cover of Wicked Little Deeds so much more than the UK one.

  6. Congrats on getting the beds straightened out, Tessa. Now the move… wishing you smooth sailing with that one. It looks like you had a great book haul. I love the cover of Servant Mage. 🙂 I’m such a sucker for a beautiful cover. And thanks for the television recommendations. 🙂

  7. The Titans trailer also snagged my interest – think I’ll have to check into that one. So jealous – I got turned down for the McManus book. Hope it’s a good one for you! Also hope the moving goes smoothly – keeping my fingers crossed.

    1. I probably only got approved because I did a The Write Reads blog tour with her last (?) book and gave it five stars, if I remember correctly. Publishers seem to keep that kind of stuff in a database or something. 🤷🏻‍♀️. For us Superhero fans, Titans is an ooh, aah kind of series.

  8. Great Haul Tessa! The Meeting Point looks really interesting to me. I’m looking forward to your reviews! Best of luck with the moving, we’ve moved so many times I can’t count, and you’re right, they never go completely as planned, but some moves are much better than others. Hope your daughter’s move is one of the better ones.
