This week has been about starting to organize my lovely daughters’ summer (as much as I need to). They both had a few important things they’ve been procrastinating about, so I had to do my mom mojo trick (they call it nagging – I call it persistence 🤷🏻‍♀️) and help inspire them to get those to-do items done.

My oldest daughter is graduating from her Master’s program at the end of the month, so that comes with it a few different plans that need to be organized. Luckily, one of the job positions she was offered (and ended up accepting) is in commutable range from UNC Chapel Hill (where both girls have been attending college), so my daughters can continue to live together for my youngest’s senior year there. They are just going to move into an apartment that is halfway between the job and school. We finally got notice that their application was approved for that apartment this week, so I started making my lists of what needs to be done. Lists, lists and more lists. Furniture to buy, places to call like insurance and movers – it’s exhausting to think about much less do.

Planning, planning, planning is going to be what my summer is all about. Or I could just go back to the beach. 🤔

How was your week?

In Nicholas Meyer’s The Return of the Pharaoh, Sherlock Holmes returns in an adventure that takes him to Egypt in search of a missing nobleman, a previously undiscovered pharaoh’s tomb, and a conspiracy that threatens his very life. With his international bestseller, The Seven Per Cent Solution, Nicholas Meyer brought to light a previously unpublished case of Sherlock Holmes that reinvigorated the world’s interest in the first consulting detective. Now, many years later, Meyer is given exclusive access to Dr. Watson’s unpublished journal, wherein he details a previously unknown case. In 1910, Dr. John Watson travels to Egypt with his wife Juliet. Her tuberculosis has returned and her doctor recommends a stay at a sanitarium in a dry climate. But while his wife undergoes treatment, Dr. Watson bumps into an old friend–Sherlock Holmes, in disguise and on a case. An English Duke with a penchant for egyptology has disappeared, leading to enquiries from his wife and the Home Office. Holmes has discovered that the missing duke has indeed vanished from his lavish rooms in Cairo and that he was on the trail of a previous undiscovered and unopened tomb. And that he’s only the latest Egyptologist to die or disappear under odd circumstances. With the help of Howard Carter, Holmes and Watson are on the trail of something much bigger, more important, and more sinister than an errant lord.
In kingdoms at war, alliances are made to be broken in a thrilling novel of magic and dark conspiracies by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Warrior’s Ransom. Ransom Barton and his wife, Claire de Murrow, have arrived in Legault to reclaim the title that was Claire’s birthright. Claire intends to rebuild a war-ravaged palace to its former glory and to teach Ransom about the magical history of their new home. But when Ransom is summoned to return to King Benedict, his loyalty to Claire is tested. Fealty prevails, however questionable the king’s motives. The ambitious Benedict, who controls his late father’s dominion, must prove his might. The warriors of the East Kingdoms have disrupted the trade routes, weakening every kingdom in their path. Benedict’s plan is to fend off a coming war through strategic alliances. But it’s Ransom’s post to keep the king’s allies—as well as his poisonous enemies—in line, even as Benedict’s defense may be inviting further chaos. As the king’s power grows and Ransom’s rise in the council is secured, a shadowy conspiracy threatens to destroy everything Ransom has worked to build. Now torn between allegiance to the woman he loves and duty to king and country, which will Ransom choose?

In the first novel in New York Times bestselling author Anne Bishop’s beloved Black Jewels Trilogy, a race of witches and warlocks whose power is channeled through magical jewels will meet their once and future queen… Seven hundred years ago, a Black Widow witch saw an ancient prophecy come to life in her web of dreams and visions. Now the Dark Kingdom readies itself for the arrival of its Queen, a Witch who will wield more power than even the High Lord of Hell himself. But she is still young, still open to influence—and corruption. Whoever controls the Queen controls the darkness. Three men—sworn enemies—know this. And they know the power that hides behind the blue eyes of an innocent young girl. And so begins a ruthless game of politics and intrigue, magic and betrayal, where the weapons are hate and love—and the prize could be terrible beyond imagining…
In the second novel set in the “darkly fascinating world” (SF Site) of Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels Trilogy, ambitions unfurl as the realm’s dreams of a liberator have finally been made flesh… The Blood have waited centuries for the coming of Witch, the living embodiment of magic. But Jaenelle, the young girl singled out by prophecy, is haunted by the cruel battles fought over her—for not all the Blood await her as their Savior. Some dismiss her as a myth. Some refuse to believe. And still others look forward to using her, making her a pawn to their shadowy devices. Only time and the devotion of her loyal guardians have healed Jaenelle’s physical wounds. But her mind is fragile, barely able to protect her from the horrifying memories of her childhood. Nothing, however, can deflect her from her destiny—and the day of reckoning looms near. When her memories return. When her magic matures. When she is forced to accept her fate. On that day, the dark Realms will know what it means to be ruled by Witch.

Fox cancelled the TV show, Lucifer, a few years ago, and after seeing how enthusiastic fans were to save the show, Netflix picked it up and made it their own. The second half of season 5 was just released, so my TV time has been spent enjoying the most recent episodes of the show. I’m happy to report that Netflix hasn’t changed anything about it. It’s still is crazy and fun and an interesting look at heaven and hell, angels and demons. This season, God is even making an appearance as you can see in the trailer below. ❤️

  1. Sounds like you have some fun planning coming up. 😉 That’s nice that your daughters can live together while they go to school. I’m sure that makes things easier.

Hope you enjoy your upcoming reads. I haven’t watched Lucifer, but I’ve heard good things about it. Enjoy your week, Tessa. 🧡

    1. Lucifer is so fun to watch!

And, my girls living together actually has worked out really well. I’ve only gotten one call from each, in the last year telling me to “do something about my daughter.” Definitely, a success, especially since I had to deal with weekly roommate drama when they were living with other people and that was a serious headache.❤

  2. Tessa, I am glad that with your ‘persistence’ your daughters have been able to make plans for next year! 😉 My week has been spent in the garden, but I did also do some organisation around the house and booked my summer staycation. Your book haul looks great – enjoy! I spent my week re-reading the YA fantasy Eragon by Christopher Paolini and watched the gripping crime-drama Mare of Easttown (2021). Take care and happy reading in the coming week. 🙂

    1. The youngest daughter finally has a career counseling appt, so maybe just maybe, she’ll have a clear path before she graduates – one that she is excited about (fingers-crossed), and the oldest daughter took care of odds and ends, which is always good.

I’ve never reread Eragon but I did like it the first time. Have a wonderful week!

  3. Hope you have a great week! I have a couple of books lined up but summer always brings a slump for me and I’m not sure why!!!

    1. I’m sure they are great books so maybe they will help you avoid the slump. It’s so incredibly hot and humid (mid to upper 90’s and the air thick with moisture) here during the summer, so reading in the airconditioning is a welcome break from that heat 😊

  4. I got Song of the Forever Rain too! It looks so good!

    1. Me too. The one I am most anxious about is my youngest’s appointment with the career counselor. I really want her to figure out this career thing preferably before she finishes next summer. I talked her into making an appointment with the career counselor because, well, as my daughter – she doesn’t listen to me when I try to direct her. lol. She will listen to a stranger much better and hopefully take steps. ❤

    1. Definitely! I am so happy that they didn’t “Netflix” it because they so could have. I like it just the way it is ❤

  6. Sounds like you have some eventful times coming up! Right now I’m reading Bone Box by Faye Kellerman! I’m finding it quite suspenseful!

  7. That sounds hectic and I hope you get everything ready for their move smoothly. I totally understand the nagging part, I probably wont get most things around the house done, if it were not for my parents’ persistence. Have a great week ahead.

  8. We’ve been counting down the days until Lucifer comes back. I’m now holding back my girls from binge-watching it! Lol! But we’ve already watched a couple of episodes.
I don’t envy you all that organising for your daughters, Tessa.
Hope you have a lovely week.

  9. I don’t think we ever stop making “mom lists,” Tessa, no matter how old they get. Congrats to your daughter on her graduation, and I’m glad they found a convenient apartment. Nice book haul. Now all you need is time to read. 🙂 Have a great week!

  10. Double congrats to your daughter, Tessa! Glad they were able to work out the living arrangements. I also started watching Lucifer, but I’ve only seen the first episode of this second half of the season. Seems like I waited forever!

    1. Lucifer is so fun to watch! Can never get enough of snarkiness.

And we are so happy that daughter. #1 made the choice she did and that she will be gainfully employed! Now she just needs to pass her CPA exams.

Hope the move is going well and I that you are enjoying Texas. (or that it does go well if you haven’t left yet.)

  11. Congrats about your daughters! And it’s great they can stay together for just a little longer. Don’t let them fool you…they love your nagging💜

I’ve been trying to read Anne Bishop for years now!!! Looking forward to seeing if these are a win, too.

    1. I’ve read one Anne Bishop and I really enjoyed it a lot. So when those two popped up on sale it was a no brainer for me. Hopefully I’ll het to them soon. They were very highly rated.
And you have had me laughing out loud twice tonight. You’re too funny because you are very right ❤️
