My Reading Week

I finished A Brush With Death yesterday. It is book 2 in the series but would be fine as a standalone. I loved the first book. This book, though, didn’t contain the pieces that I enjoyed the most from the first one. So, though I liked it, I have to say it is more of a four star rather than a five star (which is what I gave the first one – Murder on the Menu – review was posted Saturday and linked here.)

I am moving on to Black Coral today. The author was recommended to me by my husband, and I found Black Coral on NetGalley, so I’m giving Mayne a go. I will know more about how I like the book by the time you read this, but I do the think the description sounds very good. I’m excited to give Andrew Mayne a try :).

Next, I’m reading a book that I have been over the moon excited for – The Russian Cage by Charlaine Harris. This series is not at all like her other series, and I have been enjoying it so much. It’s a mix between fantasy (magic, yay!), mystery (there is always a mystery that Gunnie Rose must solve) and an alternate time-line, which is just so fun and interesting. They changed the covers though, and I have to say that I liked the original ones better but hopefully I’m in the minority.

    I have to say, I like the cover of The Russian Cage. Then again, I love all things that look like space. Don’t you? 😉

      Oh, I do. As I put the three together, I decided I was liking the newest cover more and more. Definitely keep Murder on the Menu and A Brush With Death in mind. It’s a lovely new British cozy ❤️

      Lol. My husband and I have very different opinions on many things – music, tv, food, etc… – but somehow we often enjoy the same authors. Fortunately! So far, Black Coral is reading fast and lots of underwater thrills which are all kinds of scary. Happy reading!

    I hope you enjoy your reading this week 🙂 I haven’t read a Charlaine Harris book in ages but I’m intrigued by the ones you mentioned in your post so may look them up. I’m currently reading Bound by Vanda Symon and really enjoying it.

      This new series by Harris has just blown me away. The main character is a sharpshooter (in the alternate time line the Wild West never ended) and she is just such a strong female protagonist and so cool. Plus the magic…well, I just love magic. I can’t praise it highly enough. ❤️ Happy reading!

    I just pre-ordered Rachel Caine’s fifth Stillhouse Lake. I thought the series ended with the fourth one, and I can’t wait for it to be delivered. I’m currently reading. Ghostly Interference by Jan Sikes.

    Black Coral sounds intriguing. I haven’t read the author before but it sounds like my kind of read.

    I just started the second Nora Kelly/Corrie Swanson book by Preston and Child–The Scorpion’s Tail. Only a few chapters in, but I’m hooked already!

      I noticed some Preston and Child books sitting on my Apple Books shelf earlier and I was like “ooohhh…need to read another one soon.” I think you would like Black Coral. It starts with Sloan, the main character, having to dive into alligator-infested waters including Big Bill – the biggest alligator reported alive ever – to retrieve a dead body. I immediately thought of Jaws and then I thought of you and our conversations about Jaws. Lol. So might be one for you to keep on your radar.

      I loved the first two in the series, so my expectations are definitely high. I saw that Amazon classified it as a fantasy thriller and I thought that it was perfect way to describe it.

    Andrew Mayne has always been on my radar, but I’ve never read his books. And I can’t believe I haven’t heard about this series by Harris – and already three books out.

      I love the series by Harris. Such a strong and cool protagonist and that alternate timeline is both a unique world unto itself and an interesting comparison to the actual time line. I don’t think it gets nearly enough love 😊. And I’m enjoying the Mayne book. Glad to hear he’s been on your radar. Fortunately, my husband and I (despite our many taste differences) often enjoy the same authors.

    I didn’t know the Gunnie Rose series, I’ll have to look into it, I usually enjoy Charlaine Harris. I’m currently listening to Interview with the Vampire and reading The Family Friend.
