My Reading Week

I finished A Brush With Death yesterday. It is book 2 in the series but would be fine as a standalone. I loved the first book. This book, though, didn’t contain the pieces that I enjoyed the most from the first one. So, though I liked it, I have to say it is more of a four star rather than a five star (which is what I gave the first one – Murder on the Menu – review was posted Saturday and linked here.)

I am moving on to Black Coral today. The author was recommended to me by my husband, and I found Black Coral on NetGalley, so I’m giving Mayne a go. I will know more about how I like the book by the time you read this, but I do the think the description sounds very good. I’m excited to give Andrew Mayne a try :).

Next, I’m reading a book that I have been over the moon excited for – The Russian Cage by Charlaine Harris. This series is not at all like her other series, and I have been enjoying it so much. It’s a mix between fantasy (magic, yay!), mystery (there is always a mystery that Gunnie Rose must solve) and an alternate time-line, which is just so fun and interesting. They changed the covers though, and I have to say that I liked the original ones better but hopefully I’m in the minority.

What are you reading this week? Anything that you’re particularly excited about?

Book Description

For a police diver in Florida, solving a cold-case mystery brings a serial killer out of hiding in a deep, dark thriller by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Naturalist.

Sloan McPherson and the Underwater Investigation Unit have discovered a van at the bottom of a murky Florida pond. Sealed inside the watery tomb are the bodies of four teenagers who disappeared thirty years ago after leaving a rock concert. To authorities, it looks like a tragic accident. To Sloan, it looks like murder. Every piece of evidence is starting to connect to a string of cold case vanishings throughout Florida. Clue by clue, Sloan navigates the warm, dark waters where natural predators feed, knowing that the most dangerous one is still above the surface—nesting and dormant.

But when a fresh young kill is found in the Everglades, Sloan fears that her investigation has reawakened a monster. How can she catch someone who’s a genius at hiding in plain sight? By acting as prey. The dangerous gambit is working—only too well. She’s being lured into a deception of the madman’s own design. Has Sloan set a trap for a serial killer? Or has he set one for her?

Book Description

#1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Charlaine Harris is at her best in this alternate history of the United States where magic is an acknowledged but despised power in this third installment of the Gunnie Rose series.

Picking up right where A Longer Fall left off, this thrilling third installment follows Lizbeth Rose as she takes on one of her most dangerous missions yet: rescuing her estranged partner, Prince Eli, from the Holy Russian Empire. Once in San Diego, Lizbeth is going to have to rely upon her sister Felicia, and her growing Grigori powers to navigate her way through this strange new world of royalty and deception in order to get Eli freed from jail where he’s being held for murder.

Russian Cage continues to ramp up the momentum with more of everything Harris’ readers adore her for with romance, intrigue, and a deep dive into the mysterious Holy Russian Empire.

Don’t forget to tell to me about the book(s) you are reading this week (in the comments). I love hearing about them. ❤️

  2. I hope you enjoy Black Coral and that your husband is better at recommending books than my partner! I have pretty much disliked everything he has ever told me to read LOL!

    1. Lol. My husband and I have very different opinions on many things – music, tv, food, etc… – but somehow we often enjoy the same authors. Fortunately! So far, Black Coral is reading fast and lots of underwater thrills which are all kinds of scary. Happy reading!

  3. I hope you enjoy your reading this week 🙂 I haven’t read a Charlaine Harris book in ages but I’m intrigued by the ones you mentioned in your post so may look them up. I’m currently reading Bound by Vanda Symon and really enjoying it.

    1. This new series by Harris has just blown me away. The main character is a sharpshooter (in the alternate time line the Wild West never ended) and she is just such a strong female protagonist and so cool. Plus the magic…well, I just love magic. I can’t praise it highly enough. ❤️ Happy reading!

  4. I just pre-ordered Rachel Caine’s fifth Stillhouse Lake. I thought the series ended with the fourth one, and I can’t wait for it to be delivered. I’m currently reading. Ghostly Interference by Jan Sikes.

    1. I could have sworn I had a Jan Sikes book on my Apple Books shelf but I couldn’t find it. I’m definitely familiar with the name. I look forward to seeing your thoughts about Ghostly Interference ❤️

  5. Black Coral sounds intriguing. I haven’t read the author before but it sounds like my kind of read.

I just started the second Nora Kelly/Corrie Swanson book by Preston and Child–The Scorpion’s Tail. Only a few chapters in, but I’m hooked already!

    1. I noticed some Preston and Child books sitting on my Apple Books shelf earlier and I was like “ooohhh…need to read another one soon.” I think you would like Black Coral. It starts with Sloan, the main character, having to dive into alligator-infested waters including Big Bill – the biggest alligator reported alive ever – to retrieve a dead body. I immediately thought of Jaws and then I thought of you and our conversations about Jaws. Lol. So might be one for you to keep on your radar.

      1. You’re killing me with all the books you’re adding to my TBR, but this one does sound like a good contender 🙂

And now you have me thinking about Jaws again!

    1. I loved the first two in the series, so my expectations are definitely high. I saw that Amazon classified it as a fantasy thriller and I thought that it was perfect way to describe it.

  6. Andrew Mayne has always been on my radar, but I’ve never read his books. And I can’t believe I haven’t heard about this series by Harris – and already three books out.

    1. I love the series by Harris. Such a strong and cool protagonist and that alternate timeline is both a unique world unto itself and an interesting comparison to the actual time line. I don’t think it gets nearly enough love 😊. And I’m enjoying the Mayne book. Glad to hear he’s been on your radar. Fortunately, my husband and I (despite our many taste differences) often enjoy the same authors.

    1. Oh, you should read an excerpt/sample of any of the books – probably An Easy Death. I can’t say enough good things about it! ❤️
