Sunday Post #10| Cold Weather Blues

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted here @ Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog and showcase books and things we have received. Share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead. See rules here: Sunday Post Meme

I became an auntie for the 10th time this week, with my youngest brother and his fiancé welcoming their baby boy, Benjamin, to the world 5 weeks early. My father always wanted a grandson and now he has 7! I am very bad at boy gifts even though you’d think with all this practice, I’d be a pro.

A quick shoutout to the book I finished Friday – Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Elle Cosimano. WOW! I don’t know if it’s still available on NetGalley but this has got to be one of the best mystery book I’ve read in a while. It’s funny in the way the movie Throw Momma from the Train is funny (the plot is nothing alike though)- that kind of humor where you can’t believe your laughing at what your laughing at but you can’t stop. Highly recommend ❤️

My husband was chosen to participate in a Covid-19 vaccine human trial. He’s been debating all week whether or not to do it. It definitely is a commitment with all the logging and testing, and such. Do you know anyone who has participated in one of these?

No more hints of snow this week but boy is it cold. Brrrrrr…🥶 You can find me bundled up in my comfy chair with a warm drink and a book.

How was your week? Any celebrations, big or small?

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Ruby Graham’s verdict: I want to live in Oz, where danger is defeated by friendship, your dreams are always in glowing Technicolor and you can get a pair of absolutely gorgeous ruby slippers simply by landing a house on a hag!

Luke Devlin’s verdict: Flying monkeys? Seriously?

The late Matty Devlin was so much more than Ruby Graham’s boss. He was her best friend, her father-figure, and she is showcasing a series of his favourite classic movies at the independent cinema in Notting Hill which was his life’s work … and of which she is now part owner.

Matty left the other half of The Royale to his nephew, Luke, the elusive Manhattan property developer and rumoured son of a Hollywood icon.

It’s all beginning to sound like the plot of one of Ruby’s beloved films until it becomes clear Luke is no more interested in swooping in to save the crumbling Royale than he is in talking about his famous father. He’s bad-tempered, cynical, and he couldn’t care less about the cinema!

But saving The Royale is about far more than just Matty’s legacy. The Royale is the only place where Ruby gets to live in a world of dreams and happy endings, a place where there are no lost causes, and where falling in love is just like in the movies … or is Luke about to change all that?

Simon & Schuster put this book on sale this week for $1.99. I still had $2 in Amazon credits so I bought it for free thinking my husband may enjoy it. And, me too.

Description

Harry Potter meets The Terminator in this action-packed adventure about a young man who discovers that everything he believed about his world is a lie.

The year is 2120. The humans are dead. The mages have retreated from the world after a madman blew up civilization with weaponized magical technology. Safe within domes that protect them from the nuclear wasteland on the other side, the mages have spent the last century putting their lives back together.

Nikolai is obsessed with artifacts from twentieth-century human life: mage-crafted replica Chuck Taylors on his feet, Schwarzenegger posters on his walls, Beatlemania still alive and well in his head. But he’s also tasked with a higher calling—to maintain the Veils that protect mage-kind from the hazards of the wastes beyond. As a cadet in the Mage King’s army, Nik has finally found what he always wanted—a purpose. But when confronted by one of his former instructors gone rogue, Nik tumbles into a dark secret. The humans weren’t nuked into oblivion—they’re still alive. Not only that, outside the domes a war rages between the last enclaves of free humans and vast machine intelligences.

Outside the dome, unprepared and on the run, Nik finds Jem. Jem is a Runner for the Human Resistance. A ballerina-turned-soldier by the circumstances of war, Jem is more than just a human—her cybernetic enhancement mods make her faster, smarter, and are the only things that give her a fighting chance against the artificial beings bent on humanity’s eradication.

Now Nik faces an impossible decision: side with the mages and let humanity die out? Or stand with Jem and the humans—and risk endangering everything he knows and loves?

In case you missed any of my posts last week, you can find them here:

This week is a full and busy week. I hope you come back to see the following:

  • Monday (1/18): Book Review | Before She Disappeared by Lisa Gardener (Mystery ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
  • Tuesday (1/19): Book Review | Aftershock by Judy Melinek (Mystery ⭐️⭐️⭐️)
  • Wednesday (1/20): WWW Wednesday
  • Thursday (1/21): Book Review | The Once and Future Queen: Secrets of the Starcrossed (fantasy ⭐️⭐️⭐️)
  • Friday (1/22): Book Blogger Hop: Do you own more than one eBook reader?
  • Tuesday (1/23): Book Review | Make Up Break Up (RomCom ) – I’m currently reading this book so I haven’t assigned a rating.

As I’m writing this post up, I am also binge watching A Discovery of Witches. It is so good. I highly recommend even if you haven’t read the books. I read the trilogy as it came out, so my memory is spotty at best, but I’m still enjoying and easily following it.

I also watched the first episode of WandaVision on Disney+. It is a series about Marvel’s Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff) and Vision, an android created by Ultron. I’ll be honest – I don’t get it. It bored me because I don’t understand what it is the creators are trying to do. If anyone can explain it to this non-canon-knowing lover of all things superhero, I would appreciatively read the explanation.

Did you read, watch, or do anything fun this week?

  1. Congratulations and blessings on the birth of your newest nephew, Auntie Tessa! 🎉 My cousin also gave birth this week: to a little girl and as ‘first cousin-once-removed Jessica’ doesn’t really have the same ring to it, I am calling myself Auntie Jessica! 😊 I am also so pleased you have started and are loving A Discovery of Witches – I started series two this week, too and I read the stunning historical-fiction, The Phantom Tree by Nicola Cornick. Take care and happy reading! 🙂

    1. Thank you! I think Auntie Jessica has a wonderful ring to it. Babies are such a blessing.
Discovery of Witches is so engrossing, isn’t it? I’m getting ready to start season 2 and looking forward to it ❤️

    1. We have two that I know of but have no idea how many are in the works. I think all the drug companies are working on their own version. As long as they work, I say – bring it on 😊

  2. Congratulations to your family on the birth of the baby! I imagine it never gets old, becoming an aunt, no matter how many nieces and nephews you have. 🙂 I can’t wait to read Finlay Donovan is Killing It and am so glad you loved it. I hope the vaccine trial will go well for your husband. I don’t know anyone who has taken part in an actual trial. Have a great week and happy reading!

    1. It’s very confusing if you don’t know a great deal about the Marvel canon. Luckily I have a blogger friend who does know all that stuff and she posted on it today. It makes a little more sense now. ❤️

      1. Ooh! I guess that makes sense. He’s really into superheroes so I guess he understood what was going on lol. Every time he tries explaining things it makes my eyes cross lol

        1. Lol. I’m totally with you. My daughter is big into all that stuff and when she starts explaining I hear Charlie Brown adult speak 😊

  3. I enjoyed WandaVision. I don’t quite know where they’re going with it yet but I know that it ties into the next Dr. Strange movie which has “Multiverse of Madness” in the title so I can take some guesses… 🙂

As for the Covid trial, I’ve been taking part in one via my work and have to test myself 3 times a week and log the results… It was weird at first but I find it oddly reassuring now. I don’t know what kind of trial your husband is on but I hope it goes well!
