Book Review | The 12 Christmases of You & Me by Jennifer Joyce

Goodreads’ Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Do you ever wish you can pop back in time to Christmases from your past? In The 12 Christmases of You and Me, the main character, Maisie, gets the chance to do just that.

What I Liked

I liked the main character, Maisie. She is every woman who leads with love and logic and puts family above all else. She did make one big mistake. However, hindsight being what it is, she realizes why she made it, but she might never have a chance to fix things.

Until one night, she dreams she went back to Christmas 1994 and upon waking discovers small changes that had to be as a result of things she did differently in the dream. This brings up another aspect that I enjoyed about the book – the time travel plotline. I always enjoy a good time-travel story. This one is particularly poignant because the stakes are so high for Maisie as she travels to 12 different Christmases in the past and realizes this is her last chance to fix a colossal wrong in her life.

I enjoyed this story’s redemption theme and that it is loosely reminiscent of A Christmas Carol, a favorite holiday movie. Christmas is often a time for reflection, and when you look back, the would’ve, should’ve, could’ve thoughts automatically come to the forefront. Most people can connect with this theme and enjoy the story on a uniquely personal level. We can all take a look at what we wish we could change much as Maisie has the opportunity to do.

I also love the nostalgia in the story. I enjoyed reliving Maisie’s teen years in the early 1990s as I remembered my teen years and wondered if I would go back if I could and fix the many stupid mistakes I made along the way.

To Read or Not to Read

If you are looking for a lovely Christmas story with a redemptive theme to inspire you, look no further because The 12 Christmases of You and Me is all that and more.

About the Book

What if you could go back in time and fix the biggest mistake of your life?

Two years ago, Maisie’s best friend walked out of her life and she hasn’t heard from him since. When she wakes up in 1994, she naturally assumes she’s dreaming. But when she finds herself in the past again the next night and her actions in the dream alter her present-day life, she begins to wonder if she’s somehow hopping back in time. And if she is time-travelling, can she save her friendship with Jonas?

When Maisie is forced to relive Christmases of the past, will she face up to her mistakes, or make them all over again?

The 12 Christmases of You & Me is a magical tale of friendship, first loves, and learning to live in the present.

About the Author

Jennifer Joyce is a writer of romantic comedies who lives in Manchester with her husband and their two daughters. She’s been scribbling down bits of stories for as long as she can remember, graduating from a pen to a typewriter and then an electronic typewriter. And she felt like the bee’s knees typing on THAT. She now writes her books on a laptop (which has a proper delete button and everything).

    1. I really enjoyed the redemptive theme as well as the look back to the early 90’s. It made me think a lot about whether that was something I would want to happen to me. I decided no – lol – but I am chronically unapologetic 😈
