#5OnMyTBR | Pretty Pastel Covers in my TBR pile

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook and you can learn more about it here or in the post announcing it. It occurs every Monday when we post about 5 books on our TBR.

This week’s #5onmyTBR is beautiful pastel colored covers. Pastels aren’t common for thrillers but I do have a mystery, a RomCom, and a three-book fantasy series that fit the bill.

Cry of Metal and Bone is a NetGalley ARC that I have. I’ve heard that it’s very, very good, and I am going to try to read 1 and 2 before I read it. We will see if that is what I do. I never know if I’m going to read a series in order or out of order. I even read Harry Potter out of order (the first time). 😊

For Whom the Book Tolls – another NetGalley ARC that I just fell in love with because of the title. I love a play on the title of a famous piece of literature, don’t you? Though I do hope it is not as dry as Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls. I love Hemingway’s short stories, even visited his house in Key West, but I have found his novels to be a bit dry for my taste. As a cozy mystery, I’m sure this book will be great fun.

Under a Sienna Sun is a book I’m reading for a Rachel’s Random Resources blog tour. It also happens to be a NetGalley ARC. I love the cover and think this RomCom sounds like a fun read. 🤞

Have you read any of these books or are they are on your TBR?

#1 Song of Blood and Stone (Earthsinger Chronicles 1) by L. Penelope

Genre: Epic Fantasy

Book Description:

L. Penelope’s Song of Blood & Stone is a treacherous, thrilling, epic fantasy about an outcast drawn into a war between two powerful rulers.

The kingdoms of Elsira and Lagrimar have been separated for centuries by the Mantle, a magical veil that has enforced a tremulous peace between the two lands. But now, the Mantle is cracking and the True Father, ruler of Lagrimar and the most powerful Earthsinger in the world, finally sees a way into Elsira to seize power.

All Jasminda ever wanted was to live quietly on her farm, away from the prying eyes of those in the nearby town. Branded an outcast by the color of her skin and her gift of Earthsong, she’s been shunned all her life and has learned to steer clear from the townsfolk…until a group of Lagrimari soldiers wander into her valley with an Elsiran spy, believing they are still in Lagrimar.

Through Jack, the spy, Jasminda learns that the Mantle is weakening, allowing people to slip through without notice. And even more troubling: Lagrimar is mobilizing, and if no one finds a way to restore the Mantle, it might be too late for Elsira. Their only hope lies in uncovering the secrets of the Queen Who Sleeps and Jasminda’s Earthsong is the key to unravel them.

Thrust into a hostile society and a world she doesn’t know, Jasminda and Jack race to unveil an ancient mystery that might offer salvation.

#2 Whispers of Shadows and Flame (Earthsinger Chronicles 2) by L. Penelope

The Mantle that separates the kingdoms of Elsira and Lagrimar is about to fall. And life will drastically change for both kingdoms.

Born with a deadly magic she cannot control, Kyara is forced to become an assassin. She is tasked with capturing the legendary rebel called the Shadowfox, but everything changes when she learns her target’s true identity.

Darvyn ol-Tahlyro may be the most powerful Earthsinger in generations, but guilt over those he couldn’t save tortures him daily. He isn’t sure he can trust the mysterious young woman who claims to need his help, but when he discovers Kyara can unlock the secrets of his past, he can’t stay away.

Kyara and Darvyn grapple with betrayal, old promises, and older prophecies—all while trying to stop a war. And when a new threat emerges, they must beat the odds to save both kingdoms.

#3 Cry of Metal and Bone (Earthsinger Chronicles 3) by L. Penelope

Genre: Epic Fantasy

Book Description:

As desperate Lagrimari flee their barren land for a chance at a better life in Elsira, a shadowy group with ties to the Elsiran government launches an attack on their own soil. It’s a race against time in this world of deadly magic, secret agendas and court intrigue to discover those responsible before the next assault. And in another land a new enemy awakens—one that will strike terror into the hearts of gods and men.

#4 For Whom the Book Tolls by Laura Gail Black

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Book Description:

In this cozy series debut from Laura Gail Black, Jenna Quinn finds her uncle murdered in his antique bookstore, and Jenna–his primary beneficiary–becomes the prime suspect.

Trouble follows Jenna Quinn wherever she goes. Fleeing some unsavory doings in her hometown of Charlotte, Jenna accepts her uncle’s gracious invitation to stay with him in small-town Hokes Folly, NC. In exchange, she’ll help him out in his antiquarian bookstore. But soon after she arrives, Jenna finds her uncle’s body crumpled at the base of the staircase between his apartment and the bookstore.

Before the tragedy even sinks in, Jenna learns that she’s inherited almost everything her uncle owned: the store and apartment, as well as his not-so-meager savings and the payout from a life insurance policy…which adds up to more than a million dollars. This is all news to Jenna–bad news, once the police get wind of her windfall. An ill wind, indeed, as a second murder cements Jenna’s status as the prime suspect in both deaths.

Jenna can hit the road again, taking her chances that she can elude trouble along the way. Or she can stick it out in Hokes Folly, take over the bookstore, and try to sleuth out her uncle’s killer. On the one hand, she’s made some wonderful new friends, and she feels she can thrive in the genial small-town environment. On the other hand, trouble knows her address–and so does the killer, who is determined to write the final page of Jenna’s story.

  1. I’m so with you on Hemingway.

These all look good. I haven’t read any, but the cover for the cozy is perfect for the genre. And Under a Sienna Sun reminds me of a romcom by Claire Croxton called Santorini Sunset (which I highly recommend). Great selection, Tessa.

    1. Thank you 😊! I agree about the cozy cover. And you have me very curious about Claire Croxton’s books. I will have to look that up.

    1. Weirdly enough, not really for me. Now, if I read the last book out of order – I may not worry about reading the ones that came before but if I start in the middle, it’s just a matter of catching up and then moving forward. That’s what happened with HP and this series on the post has more books coming.❤️

    1. If I remember correctly, I didn’t even hear about it until the 3rd book and I just started there not really realizing that is was a series 😊

    1. I did it by accident with HP, and now I never seem to notice if it’s a book that’s part of a series before I request it. I’m working at doing better about noticing but for some reason I don’t have trouble following the story even if I do start in the middle.

    1. I noticed that Williams has high reviews on other books, so I’m thinking this will be a good read.
