Book Blogger Hop | Thoughts on Indie Bookstores

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blog.

Question:

Do you visit indie and/or used bookstores? Also, have you ever worked in any?

Answer:

To talk about the only indie bookstore I visit, first I need to introduce you to my hometown – Davidson, NC. Davidson is part of the Lake Norman area, which is a suburb of Charlotte, NC. It’s a small town – population 19,000+ – and the old Main Street (pictured above) is still where most of the shopping is housed including the indie bookstore, Main Street books (picture below). Davidson College is right across the street and has notable alum such as Patricia Cornwell (author), Stephen Curry (basketball player), and Woodrow Wilson (former US president).

My husband and I call Davidson the Stars Hollow (from Gilmore Girls) of the south. It’s a small town that is committed to keeping its small town-ness and is full of all sorts of colorful characters that can be met on an average day walking along Main Street. I’ve even written short vignette-type stories of several characters.

Main Street Books is owned by Adah, who greets you as soon as you enter her store, which used to be The General Store back when Davidson was still a mill town of some note. I always feel right at home when I walk through the door – free to browse at my leisure and sure to have a detailed conversation with Adah or one of the other Book Sellers all of whom have never met a stranger.

I’ve never worked in any bookstore, though I did work in the college library during my undergrad days.

What are your thoughts on Indie and/or used bookstores?

    I used to love book stores too. But somehow the one near my house became far as there was road construction and diversion and my financial condition changed so I couldn’t buy the physical books. Then in 2011 came Amazon and I switched to ebooks once I got my first E reader

      I mostly do ereader too. I just like to browse in the bookstore and sometimes buy books as gifts. The coffee shop is next door, so it’s very relaxing to grab a chai or a coffee and slip next door to the bookstore with it ❤️

      Ours almost did about five years ago, but luckily a new owner bought it and has made a success of it over the last few years. I think it’s managed to survive during this crazy time. ❤️

    I’m in NC too! Now I have to visit this little town you had me at Stars Hollow and Bookstores! LOL! I am in Raleigh so definitely will have to jot this down so I can visit this little town one of these days!
