Book Blogger Hop | eBooks and Physical Copies of Books

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blog.

Question:

If you own an eBook, would you also purchase a print copy as well?

(submitted by Tabatha @ Broken Soul Reviews)

Answer:

If I buy both, it is usually the other way around – I have a physical book and then buy the eBook. It’s not unusual for me to get frustrated with having to have light with a physical book – something that is not needed with my iPad – and not to be able to highlight passages and include notes. I mean, I could highlight and take notes in a physical book but I never would and having a notebook nearby for notes is not always convenient.

So, no, I probably wouldn’t buy a print copy of a book if I already own an eBook edition (the only exception would be if I had an opportunity to get it signed by the author) but, yes, I would buy an eBook edition after purchasing a physical copy.

Then things like this happen where I accidentally order both 🤦🏻‍♀️

How about you? Would you buy both formats of books?

  1. I agree. You know, I’ve never really given the highlighting tool much of a chance, but I could start doing that. I really on my memory far too much for reviewing.

  2. Well… sometimes I pre-order a book and then I see the ARC available on NetGalley or Edelweiss and… well… I can’t help myself. But no, usually if I have an eBook I don’t buy a print copy, unless the eBook is from when I had a Nook and it is no longer available to read on my Kindle.

      1. Twice for me so far – with Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell and with Warlight by Michael Ondaatje! Now, I also pre-ordered Rachel Joyce’s Miss Benson’s Beetle, and then she generously sent me an uncorrected proof copy in the mail (all the way to Israel, no less), so I’ve got that and I’ll have a regular print copy in late June. I think I’ll save the purchased book to give to someone I love!

  3. If I had the ebook and could get a signed copy of a print book, I’d do it. Sometimes I’ll buy the ebook, but then listen to the audiobook instead (if it’s on my Nook). If it’s on Kindle, I’ll get Alexa to read it to me occasionally.

  5. I definitely would. If I buy an ebook and and it turns out to be extraordinary, I’ll buy a print copy as well. But it has to be a book I see myself reading over and over. I like to have the print copy as a backup in the event my Kindle isn’t charged 🙂

  6. I do this a lot with library books. Sometimes I’m just not sure if I will like a book so I get the ebook from the library and I like it then I will buy a copy.

  7. While I love the built-in light, I don’t take advantage of highlighting and notes in my kindle reads. I should! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  8. I would actually buy a physical copy of an e-book I’ve read and enjoyed. I’m a book collector as well as a reader, and I like owning books. Sometimes when I’m not sure if I’ll enjoy a book, I buy an e-book (if my library doesn’t have it, that is) and after I read it, I decide if I want to buy it, or not.

    1. I used to be a book collector, but very bad dust mite allergies made me rethink that. That’s a good strategy for determining books to buy 😊

  9. I know what you mean about being able to make notes with ebooks, Tessa. The short answer for me is generally no. However, if I’ve read an ebook by a favourite author that I’d like to get signed one day then yes! 💜😊
I hope you enjoy the rest of your week, stay safe and healthy.

  10. We are so spoiled with being able to highlight passages in e-books! I like that feature too. There is such a convenience to reading e-books. I’m more likely to buy an e-book of a physical book I own as well. Although, there are times I will buy a physical copy of an e-book I already have. Especially if it’s a favorite I want to add to my physical bookshelf. I hope you have a great week.

    1. Highlighting is the best. It is so handy when trying to remember character names and thoughts. Have a great week!

  11. Interesting, answer, Tessa. I always start with an ebook. And then, if I LOVE it, I buy the print book, either to put it on my book-shrine or to write all over it, highlighting all the beautiful writing. 😀
