Book Blogger Hop | Discovering I Am A Bookworm

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blog.

When did you first know you’re truly a bookworm?
Did you lose sleep over a novel?

Answer:

When I was very young, I spent my days with my great grandmother, Miff, while my mother worked nearby. She is the one who gave me the nickname Tessa, and she lived in a farmhouse with my great grandfather and my grandparents. Miff spent much of her time in a chair situated in a bay window in the dining room, which was arguably the hub of the house. And, while she was in that chair, she would read – anything and everything for hours on end.

At home, my mother spent much of her free time with a book in hand, which went into her prized glass-enclosed bookshelf along with our set of World Book Encyclopedias once she finished. She read to me every night, and when I learned how to read at the young age of 3, she provided me with plenty of new books to enjoy. I would have never guessed there was a label for their love of books because, to me, it was just what people did.

I should have guessed I was a bookworm when my scholastic book order was always four times bigger than anyone else’s or when I was devouring adult books before I was even in middle school. Perhaps the amount of time I spent in the library while visiting my aunt and uncle at the US Base in the Philippines should have been a clue.

Even with all these events that should have led to the realization that I am a bookworm, it wasn’t until I was in college and not surrounded by a family of readers that it came clear to me that not everyone read as much or as frequently as me. It was then that I realized that I am and would always be a proud bookworm.

Have I ever lost sleep over a book? Sure – all the time. I have no idea when the first time that happened was, but if a story touches me deep enough or I can’t wait to finish a book, I have a hard time sleeping and usually give in to my book craving.

    1. You are welcome. It’s a great review!
I didn’t even realize until I was thinking about the answer that I thought reading a lot was something everyone did – so labeling it was non existent

  1. What a great story! I think I discovered I was a bookworm at a very young age, because I was NOT surrounded by readers like you were!

  2. That’s so cool about your family. My parents were avid readers too. I realized I was a bookworm in grade school. every weekend my parents took me to the library for new reading material. I so looked forward to those Saturday trips, and devoured books. I still remember them fondly. By the time I reached high school I realized that many people didn’t read. None of my friends did. My husband isn’t a reader either.
As an adult those Saturday library trips became trips to the bookstore with my mother. She was my reading buddy throughout life. We often read the same books and it was so much fun discussing them!

    1. You know, I don’t remember it as being a thing in high school. I guess I read just at home when no one else was around or maybe my friends were bookworms too. But, what great memories you have!!!

  3. Aww, your childhood sounds so sweet! Grandparents (and great-grandparents) can sometimes be the best influences (and also the worst, hehe). I never knew there was a label for it, either, until probably, like, fifth or sixth grade, when other kids labeled me a bookworm. I was fine with it. xD I got the sixth grade superlative for bookworm LOL. But it was definitely my grandparents, who were always reading, both of them, who inspired my love of it. And I often read up, too. The first adult book I ever remember reading was The Sea Wolf, which my grandmother let me read … not having read … and wow, I wasn’t ready, but I’m pretty sure my love of all the unhealthy relationships started there. xD

    1. Oh, that’s a great story! One of my first adult novels was a John Jakes’ novel called The Bastard. I don’t even think my mom knew I had taken it out of the bookshelves. But boy did I get in trouble for calling my brother a bastard at my grandparents’ house. My mom packed up a lot of books after that. I can’t imagine why. Lol.

      1. Ahahaha I love that! xD I first learned the word “bastard” at, like, three from my father, and he got quite the lecture from my mother after I called a fish a bastard when it slipped off my hook when I almost caught it LOL.

  4. Awww. I think many of us bookish people had someone in our lives who instilled in us a love of books. Blessing to those people like Miff who introduced us to the magical world of the written word. 🙂 Beautiful post.
