Bookish (and not so Bookish) Thoughts, hosted by Bookishly Boisterous, is a chance for book bloggers to dabble in areas besides books (but those are welcome too). This month I plan on talking about my month of NaNoWriMo or what it’s like to write a book in 30 days.
First Week of NaNoWriMo
I’m a little bit ahead of schedule…but just a very little bit…as you can see. Overall, this week has had its ups and downs – so a normal week.
We went out of town this weekend. I can read when I am traveling, but writing is challenging. I guess it’s because my brain has trip stuff clogging it up and keeping the muse at bay. I call this” the plight of the decisive, super-organized mom.” We were able to see both of our daughters, so the trip definitely worth it.
A second challenge has been keeping up with social media. I recently started a bookstagram account that is very time-consuming. Coming up with photo ideas, collecting props, setting up photoshoots, taking the photos, editing the images, and prepping those photos for an Instagram post takes time. I enjoy showing my creativity in a new and different way. Still, it can be challenging to find the time, especially now with NaNoWriMo.
The last challenge was the dreaded time change. Love the extra hour, but wow, it wreaks havoc on my sleeping. A sleepy brain is not always a creative brain in my case. Is anyone else plagued by this?
I received 5 different badges this week – not bad for just 6 days. The badges: 2-day writing streak, 3-day writing streak, 1667 words, 5000 words, and 10000 words 🎉

I have heard about Scrivener from other writers, and though I had looked at it – I never used it from the ground up. NaNoWriMo is the perfect chance to give it a real try.
I enjoy the way Scrivener is laid out using virtual notecards for each scene. Notecards that allow you to write the full scene within the card and that you can move around and organize as you see fit. This flexibility is the best when you decide a scene would be better in a different part of a story than you originally planned.
With this organization tool, you can also write out of order. I have written the first few scenes, and I have written scenes found in the middle of the story. Whatever I feel inspired by on a given day, I can easily tackle without it being the organizational nightmare it would be in one long Word document.
I knew if I was going to have even a chance of winning NaNoWriMo, I was going to have to have a pretty rigid schedule. So, it looks like this:
6:30-8:30am – coffee and reading (books on my review calendar)
8:30-10:00am – officially starting my day (breakfast, social media, Live with Kelly and Ryan)
10:00am-1:00pm – write, write, and write some more
1:00-4:00pm – lunch, chores/errands, and a much needed break
4:00-6:00pm – Instagram photos
Luckily, I do not work outside the home or else I would never be able to handle all of this! But, so far so good.
